Editorial Reviews:

The only style manual ever to appear on bestseller lists has explained to millions of readers the basic principles of plain English. The book’s mantra—make every word tell—is still on point. Whether seventeen or seventy, this much-loved classic, now in its fourth edition, will forever be the go-to guide when in need of a hint on how to make a turn of phrase clearer, or a reminder on how to enliven prose with the active voice. Kalman’s exquisite illustrations give the revered work a jolt of new energy, making the learning experience more colorful and clear. The Elements of Style Illustrated will come to be known as the definitive, must-have edition.

Summary: Boorish
Comment: I need a resource, not a coffee table book. The font is hard to read. The pictures do not seem to make sense with the content, and it is hard to find the rule you need. Grrr.

If they are going to jazz this gem up, they need to remember that we *use* this book. The artwork should complement and aid the understanding, not confuse the reader.

Blah.

Why a dog on the cover? Why????

Summary: Belongs on a thinker's short bookshelf
Comment: A new edition, illustrated by Maira Kalman and forewarded by Roger Angell (the sports writer and step-son of E. B. White), of the book that belongs on a thinker's short bookshelf next to Frankfurt's books on truth and bullshitting (reviewed separately here).

This is not a book usually read straight through, for pleasure, but perhaps it might be profitably and, yes, pleasurably done by more people than have done to date. I was first introduced to this slim volume in an earlier edition in college, and its few simple, memorable rules should strongly shape every writer's style.

This particular edition, a gift from a past project manager, has been updated with new examples and nicely illustrated with watercolors (I think!) clarifying the examples.

Summary: Very important resource for writers
Comment: I wish I could remember who originally recommended the original Strunk & White Elements of Style to me. If I could remember, I would find them and hug them unabashedly.

If you're writing ANYTHING and care AT ALL about how it turns out then do yourself a favor and pick this one up. The organization is very strange (there isn't any to speak of) and the writing style is very direct. The result is a no-nonsense book that teaches you to cut the crap out of your writing.

There are many, many valuable lessons contained in Strunk's short and useful guide but the best ones, for me, are the ones regarding comma usage and his favorite command, "Omit needless words." During everything I've ever written since reading this book I've heard a disembodied voice telling me to remove words. I've noticed while editing other people's work that the piece can be improved dramatically by deleting all the words that say nothing.

It's a quick read but a necessary one for anyone doing any kind of writing.

Summary: Fun Addition to a Classic
Comment: The Maira Kalman illustrations are a delightful addition to the fine writing advice of William Strunk and E.B. White. Will the playful paintings aid in your pursuit of writing greatness obtained from reading these pages? YES!

Strunk and White teach us how to write well and thoughtfully. Kalman's wonderful illustrations demonstrate that writing without an attitude of joy is simply dull.
