From Raiders of the Lost Ark to The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The man with the hat is back–in the definitive behind-the-scenes look at the Indiana Jones epic action saga.

When George Lucas and Steven Spielberg put their heads together to create a no-holds-barred action-adventure movie, bigger-than-life hero Indiana Jones was born. The rest is breathtaking, record-breaking box-office history. Now comes an all-new Indiana Jones feature film: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Here’s your chance to go on location for an up-close, all-access tour of the year’s most eagerly anticipated blockbuster, as well as the classics. The Complete Making of Indiana Jones is a crash course in movie magic-making–showcasing the masters of the craft and served up by veteran entertainment chroniclers J. W. Rinzler and Laurent Bouzereau. Inside you’ll find:

• exclusive on-set interviews with the entire cast and crew of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, including Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, and John Hurt–plus director Steven Spielberg, executive producer George Lucas, screenwriter David Koepp, and the incredible production team that built some of the most fantastic sets ever.

• hundreds of full-color images–from storyboards, concept paintings, and set design schematics to still photos from all four films with candid action shots of the productions in progress

• an in-depth chronicle of the making of the first three Indiana Jones movies–Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade–including transcripts of the original concept meetings, cast and crew anecdotes, production photos, and information on scenes that were cut from the final films

• never-before-seen artwork and archival gems from the Lucasfilm Archives

• and much more!

Don’t miss the thrilling new movie or this definitive making-of opus. It’s as essential to fans as that trusty bullwhip is to Indy!

Summary: Check out the 1981 "Making of Raiders" Book!
Comment: An Indiana Jones treasure trove! If you enjoyed this new book then check out the original 1981 book THE MAKING OF RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK by Derek Taylor, which has much more detail than J.W. Rinzler was able to print. Taylor was part of the production team and followed the crew to Tunisia. A really great read and too-long out of print.

Summary: You just should buy this
Comment: I've bought this book for my husband and he loved it. Guess anyone will when you're a fan or at least like the movies. This book is complete, filled with pictures, anekdotes, stories, sketches.... You just should buy it, if you're into Indiana Jones!

Summary: The Making of My Favorite Film
Comment: I can honestly say that Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite film of all-time. I cannot count how many times I went to the theater back in the summer of 1981 as a wide-eyed 14 year old kid and took this amazing trip alongside Indy, Sallah, and Marion. That being said, this is a review of the book and not the film.

The book was a wonderful read. I was happy to see the most space set aside for Raiders, but the behind-the-scenes look at each film was equally interesting. The illustrations were very well chosen and my favorite images were the rare on-set photos of cast and crew.

Summary: Complete Indiana Jones factoids of all four movies
Comment: I would have to say that all questions of how they did that without digital effects with the exception of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the crystal skull. Are all answered, there are a lot of unpublished pictures in this book! Some of the stuff I knew and a lot of the stuff I did not know, so that alone makes this book a fun read with great pictures about all four movies you will walk away being an Indiana Jones expert on what where how and why!

Summary: Awesome insight - but gets shallower as the book goes on
Comment: Written by the same author as the equally-awesome The Making of Star Wars (which I own but sadly have not yet read), this book is the definitive tale of how all four Indiana Jones films were made. Beginning in 1977 on a beach in Hawaii and ending in 2008 with the release of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it is a filmmakers dream: a look into the minds and practices of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, two of the great geniuses of modern film. It takes you through story development, casting, pre, pro, and post-production - it's a great learning experience. Not to mention Indy is the greatest action hero - ever. And that is why it is awesome.

My only complaint is that the chapters pretty much get progressively shorter and less in-depth, with the most time being spent on Raiders. This is kind of understandable, seeing as Raiders started the franchise and required the most development. But it was still a bit disappointing to not have some of the interesting details about the sequels highlighted.
