An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love--and face the hardest decision of his life.

Customer Rating: Summary: Typical but good Comment: Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a quick, easy read. It kind of had a boring start but definitely picked up a bit later. I loved John and Savannah as a couple but I knew once he went back to Germany, it would be a struggle for them to stay together. I will say I never truly got a grasp of the love between John and Savannah in the end. It was so wishy washy. I understand their logic but it still didn't fit right. The ending was typical but I still found it to be an average/above average book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Dear John Review - TL Comment: This book was a definite tear jerker. I read the entire novel in less than a weekend; it was very difficult to put it down. It is about a military boy who was always in trouble as a kid, who falls in love with a beautiful Christian girl who inspires and intrigues him. She is in town for the summer buiding houses with her church when he came across her on the beach, saving her purse after it had fallen in the ocean. The book maps the story of their love and his homelife with a father who is incapable of social interaction. John goes back to the military after meeting his new love interest, with intentions of marrying her after his contract ended. Little did they know, the tradgedies of September 11th would soon hit and he would sign-up again for another military term, which inevitably seals their fate. You definitely need a box of Kleenex to read this book, but it's one of Sparks' best for sure!
Customer Rating: Summary: A heart wrenching story. You will fall in love with this book Comment: Be prepared to cry if you read this book. It has a storyline that will stay with you forever. In fact, I didn't want to put it down and when I had to take a break from it, I found myself wondering what the characters were doing.
With some of Sparks's stories, I know the ending before I'm halfway through. That is not the case with this book. This story keeps you interested & it definitely sucks you in.
You will cry, you will smile, and you will fondly think of that one person you will always love even if you cannot be with him (or her).
Do yourself a favor and read this book. It's one of those books you need on a rainy weekend that you just wnat to spend on the couch curled up with a warm cup of hot cocoa, tea, or coffee. Keep the tissues close by.
Customer Rating: Summary: Spark's Even Outdoes Himself Comment: Dear John could arguably be Spark's best novel to date. As perhaps the greatest love storyteller of our time, the New York Times Best Seller tops even his own works.
Dear John attempts tells a story of true love and loss and all of the emotions that go along with them. Set in modern times, it paints an accurate picture of post-9/11 life and its effect on relationships.
In gripping detail, Spark's lays out the story of John and Savannah and a summer romance that would last until the end of time. But love is not without its tragedies, and these two would be faced with the hardest ones of all. Would their love be strong enough to survive? Or would time and distance allow love to be overcome by everyday adversities? What sacrifice would be too much to ask?
In the end, both Savannah and John learn the true meaning of love. Both learn all too well, that love can only be valued by what you would give to show it.
A true must-read that will tug at the very fabric of your heart.
Customer Rating: Summary: Poor John Comment: Loved the book. I could relate to the characters, especially Savannah. As a southern, christian girl myself, I found her very believable. I just wish the ending would've been a happy one. Now I have to worry about John...
