Editorial Reviews:

With their dueling guitar leads and harmonies built on a double drummer foundation, the Allman Brothers Band cast the mold for the southern rock sound that would proliferate in the '70s. Virtuoso musicians, their songs drew upon a number of southern influences, including country, the blues, New Orleans jazz, and even gospel, creating a sound that was distinctly theirs. Decade of Hits is a great catalog of the Allman's at their guitar wielding best. The sweet, infectious harmonies on the instrumental "Jessica" have become a classic reference point in themselves. Next to the tragedies that plagued them--two motorcycle deaths, heroin addiction--the Allman's are probably best known for the heroic "Ramblin' Man." Written and sung by the now legendary Dickey Betts, the song contained everything that made the band great: intricate guitar harmonies, a strong melody, and just enough twang to keep the thing tight. Decade also contains Allman staples "Melissa," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and "Southbound." --Steve Gdula

Summary: Trying To Make a livin and Doing The Best I Can
Comment: It plays on my car as we drive to Monterey and I think, along with a handful of others this is my favorite album. A handful get that kind of adulation and deep thanks. When I go into times of surgery and pain it helps. As I drive to an extremely difficult job it helps. Why I wonder? Ummm easily the musicians abilities, beyond beautifully played, it's front porch sound. I crave a sweet tea listening, sweaty day in the south, long night of dreaming awake. It grew with me, doesn't propel me back it crawls through my history teasing out rifts, pieces of truths, glimpses of hard and easy days. This music healed a few broken moments. I honestly play it to find a center.

We all find that there are pieces and places that we know are our thing, this was mine. Monterey which I leave in awhile another. I'm so lucky that I lived in the place of wonder 9 years and that a wonderful friend gave me the Allman's long ago as a way to, as he put on the cassette, not leave my roots ......'

So that as a way of preface, there are on this CD all the tunes one most hears on FM radio, re-hears, and knows I would think intuitively now. I like "Melissa" and Dickie Betts best. I love Greg Allman's piano.

I was thinking driving through the hills, why these messages, what am I hearing, rough lives, ordinary, traveling, loves, change, movin on, hanging, hard things, backdooring and luving up someone out the window. What is this in me? Is this the values I have? I decided that I found some answers yesterday reliving the Steinbeck I love at the Center in Salinas, where I lived a long while....we just are so in denial of our human frailty living in a difficult and messy life. We have a writer who lived the fields with the poor, wandered the street, for knowing just a man. We are tragically having an affair with a new century of technological expediencies, remaking our image as cyborg. A disharmony.

So yeah, whatever. If you get this in an old car and beat around the country talking to people, capable of finding love and willing to admit to attractions, needs, willing to understand music freed us from a lot of lying and you just like to hang, maybe want a good way to deal through some rough patches then I'd go on the porch with the Allman's.

Comment: A good collection of Allman Brothers music on one cd. I have most of the songs on several other cd's but liked having them all on one. Recommend to Allman Brothers music fans.

Summary: Steve Gluda mistake
Comment: Don't mean to be picky, but I'm a big fan of Billy Joe Shaver and just wanted to let Steve know that B.J. wrote "Rambling Man", but Betts did do a great job. A little side note, a friend of mine was a nurse in a drug-treatment facility in Atlanta where Gregg and Dicky were treated. She said Betts was a great guy and Allman was a real jerk.

Summary: What a band!
Comment: This is older music that still rocks into 2007. I bought this for my husband as a birthday present and got a very pleased husband for my trouble. Check out Gov't Mule if you like Allman Brothers.
