The Zoom/FaxModem 56K External Model 2948 is Zoom's classic, award-winning, external fax modem. It plugs into the serial (RS-232C) port of a Windows, Mac OS or Linux-based desktop computer. The Zoom/ FaxModem 56K External Model 2948's performance is further enhanced by its on-board controller and DSP (Digital Signal Processor). The Zoom/FaxModem Model 2948 is capable of receiving data from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or online service over standard phone lines at speeds up to 56 Kbps uncompressed. Outgoing data is transmitted at speeds up to 33.6 Kbps.The Zoom/FaxModem 56K External Model 2948 is Dualmode, supporting both the V.90 ITU Standard and K56flex, the commonly used pre-standard 56K technology. The modem automatically selects V.90, K56flex, 33.6 Kbps or slower speed to achieve the fastest compatible connection speed. Like all Zoom Dualmode modems, the Zoom Model 2948 includes V.80 capability for compatibility with H.324 standard point-to-point video telephony over regular phone lines. It also supports Group 3, Class 1 Fax. Additional features include Zoom's Channel 2 Call Waiting support which allows selective answering of incoming voice calls during Web browsing. The Channel 2 feature works in conjunction with the Call Waiting service available from most phone companies. It functions with all ISPs (including AOL) and popular browsers.The Model 2948 also features ZoomGuard. ZoomGuard provides superior protection against lightning, the number one cause of modem failure. ZoomGuard is not only better than the "varistor" protection found on other modems, but also outperforms most stand-alone surge protectors. Bundled software includes hardware drivers and utilities plus fax/voice/ data communications, videoconferencing, Internet access, graphics editing and other useful programs.

Summary: Much Happier
Comment: I wrote a review previous to this claiming to be a little disappointed. Well, Now I am elated! I sent the product back and they replaced it at no charge! I haven't experienced any more problems. Apparently it just had a flaw in that particular item. I recommend this product.

Summary: Cannot Connect
Comment: I have had no luck in getting the modem to work. It sets up ok and responds to AT commands until it is asked to dial. It immediately returns ERROR. I have worked with the vendor service desk for over a month. I have tried two Macintoshes and a PC. I've tried 3 different phone lines and paid the phone company to check the lines at my house. I have edited CCL files. I have had two engineers and a computer technician try. I have swapped the modems with other modems known to work and they all work fine, but the Zoom doesn't. Amazon's wonderful replacement policy replaced the first modem. The second modem does the same identical thing. I have spent too much time and money on something that is supposed to plug in and operate easily. I'll try something else.

Comment: I ordered this product to give to my mother for mother's Day. She got it on time. Now As of June 13,2000 the modem is no longer working. It simply won't connect. There is some type of error and won't accept commands.

Summary: Couldn't believe the improved performance!
Comment: Used to have a 3Com modem and a friend purchased the Zoom Mac modem and he always seemed to connect at 50K while I was only connecting at a substantially lower rate. Since we had the same ISP, I knew it had to be the modem. Bought the Zoom last week and am very impressed with the improved performance. Highly Reccommend!
