Summary: Great Speakers
Comment: I agree with the last couple reviewers... just reflecting on how long I've had these. I got these speakers (1050) for my first computer when I was about ten in 2000 and now they're up at college with me sounding as good as ever. One speaker gets a little static when adjusting volume, but still working great.

Summary: THE BEST
Comment: Excellent sound. Volume control and treble/bass knob are easily accessible. Just plug them into the back of your PC.

I've had the same speakers for at least ten years. I used them with the first MYST game, so figure how long ago that was. Every time I get a new PC these speakers get used, and the new speakers go into the closet. The Labtec's are dented and banged up, scratched and dinged, but I won't trade them for anything. They got the best sound around. I don't have to crank the volume button to its highest setting just to hear something.

They do take up some space on my PC desk, but it's worth it. The wider apart you place them, the greater the stereo sound.

Summary: the speakers are not connected right.
Comment: These speakers worked fine at first, but eventually one speaker started to sound lower than the other. I eventually got them to balance, by slowly adjusting the volume using the knob. It balanced by moving the knob to about 75% volume and leaving it there. If something is to loud, which it often is at 75% volume, I have to adjust the volume on the website, or use the windows volume control. Every once in a while though without even touching the speakers, they screw up again and I have to adjust them again. I think this may have to do with the fact that one speaker is connected to the other, and then that speaker is connected to the computer. The Connection goes speaker to speaker to computer. I think one of the cables may not be connected right, but I'm Not going to open the Speakers to find out. I might do it if I buy new speakers though. Other speakers that have worked for me are connected differently. There is one cable that connects to the computer and that cable splits in the middle and connects to both speakers simultaneously in a Y configuration.

Summary: Still very good sounding low tech computer speakers.
Comment: 5 stars for inexpensive computer speakers. This review is written in June 2007 for speakers that were a new product around 1999 or 2000. I'm writing a positive review now because I've had several sets and just bought another while reflecting on the reviews here at Amazon. (You can still find them even if you can't find them here on Amazon.)

I did a lot of comparison shopping 7 years ago and these Labtec 1070s rose above all in their low price range. They have a much better than average sound that's good for just about everything including music. I used a set on a portable CD player for a long time as a small jam system and it sounded better than many boom boxes (and it didn't look bling stupid). They work fine for listening to internet music stations while you're at the computer. Not fatiguing, not a lot of bass or extreme top but the rest is clean and flat.

They use 2.75" full range paper cone drivers with metal cased magnets (video shielded) in relatively heavy plastic molded cases. The cases are rounded and ribbed inside which makes them more rigid and less resonate to the drivers. That's to say you hear the drivers and not the enclosures vibrating along with the drivers unlike many inexpensive plastic computer speakers. They don't sound like their plastic enclosures. That's a big plus.

The connecting wires are all attached to the speakers with the only plugs on front of the right speaker for headphones and mike, although I've never used either. They have a regular power plug (no wall wart). The electronics are all in the right channel speaker. There's also an on/off 3D Surround function that you may or may not like. It definitely makes the sound more 3D-like, but that may not be so good when listening to near-field music. I personally prefer it shut off so it doesn't do something strange to a proper stereo image.

The set I have coming right now is my 4th to go on my dad's computer so he can listen to decent sounding internet music on his brand new DSL connection. If I find a need for another set I'll surely look for them.

Summary: Nice with voices
Comment: These speakers are sort of dull and don't have any real bass, as you'd expect from their size. The midrange is OK. I don't know how much they sold for, so I can't say if they're good for the price. I really like them on vocal Podcasts though. The sound is very articulate and the imaging is good, like the person is right there standing over my desk. For this they sound better than my $45 Altec 2.1 thing. They also have a generally better midrange, but a darker sound. Even the voices are a little dark, but still very pleasant with these speakers.
