Customer Rating: Summary: Software Is Terrible(This Review Is For"Quick Cam Messenger" Comment: The camera it self is small and compact and for the price is a good value...but what good is it if the software malfunctions.First of all the software disk is loaded with 3rd party software which means it contains "ADWARE"...the reasoning they tell you this is installed is for automatic updates....now seriously, how many updates do you get for a web cam?..wouldn"t it be simpler just to go to there site and check, instead of having a third party tracing your internet movements?...if you have SPYBOT or ADWARE on your PC run after you install the software and you will see what i mean....with the disk they supplied SPYBOT found 22 traces of "ADWARE"..so i unistalled the software disk and went to the LOGITECH site and downloaded the software from there and they state "no third party " from there site download...well load and behold when i ran SPYBOT and ADWARE i found none...but just for backup i used SPYSWEEPER which is a purchased program...and guess what...it located 7 traces of adware...the name of the adware that is installed is called"BACKWEB" ..now the real problem every once in awhile my PC will for no reason shut down...the problem arises from a bad driver issue within the LOGITECH software....they are well aware of the situation, but as of now they have not resolved it...bottom line is i will never purchase another LOGITECH product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Camera....but so much for compatibility Comment: Works great on everything except 95/98 and it seems to work best on ME. If you have a VIA chipset especially (like me) you can just forget about it installing right. Heres what happened:With my first mobo I used the software on the cd rom and the camera never recognized right, after it said to plug the camera in, the Plug and Play Window would come up and say USB Device and then all of a sudden change to an unknown device I [messed]around with the software on the disc 3 or 4 times removing it and reinstalling it. Downloaded hardware patches from VIA's site and it did not work. Fast forward one year, bought a new mobo after lsat one stopped working right after a failed attempt to rewrite the BIOS (never bother with flashing your BIOS btw too much at risk) downloaded NEWER version of software from Logitech site, installed hardware patches from manufactuers site, then installed Quickcrap, and SAME problem, re-recognized as Unknown device, there have been moments where it has recognized correctly, however, it goes back to being an unknown device after a few reboots of my pc. There is OBVIOUSLY a problem with logitech's software since many other ppl I have talked to with the same problem at the VIA Technologies website on the support BBS said that the 4-in-1 VIA patch and USB Filter patch worked like a wonder to make their webcam work; however, it is not been that simple for me. ANd I have had tried to get this to install on my breothers pc (he has a Intel chipset) and it does the same thing, after I install it with the newest version of Quickcrap. Logitech should be more concerned about writing proper code rather than catering to newbies. Fast forward yet another year, now it just sits in my box it came in, I have long since given up on making it work and I am still debating whether or not to cave in and spend [more] to get a Lucent USB upgrade card and hopefully itll work then. It handles streaming media better than the camera I borrowed from a friend since then. It records videos VERY smoothly, problem is getting the goddamn thing to be recognized properly by windows. Pay attention to what reviewer alex j. avriette said, as well it pales in comparison to my problem. This will NOT work if you have a SIS, ALI or (espeically) a VIA Chipset. According to VIA and Logitech getting a lucent usb upgrade card is your only option to get this damn thing working if your having the same trouble as my problems, and have a VIA chipset. But if I was you I would not bother with buying this if you have one of the three trouble chipset brands listed about, its not worth the grief...
Customer Rating: Summary: this camera has been great (knock on wood) Comment: easy to operate easy to install great tool for communicating long distance with family that are hard to get ahold of other ways i have yet to find a flaw can't wait to experiment more with the video stuff
Customer Rating: Summary: Decent & inexpensive Comment: I have had the Quickcam for a while now, and while it is a decent camera, the quality could be a little better. The software is slow, which I would like to see improved. But for the money it is a lot of fun and an easy way to have your own Webcam running in a few minutes.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good value, no problems Comment: This product works great. I have Windows 98 with a Dell Pentium II 333 MHz. I was concerned a little before I purchased it because some reviews said they had installation problems. Mine went smoothly. I installed the driver, the Logitech software, and Netmeeting, all came on one CD. Then I pluged the Webcam and immediately started using it with netmeeting. The picture quality is good for Webvideo and netmeetings. Light is very important for the quality. If you are sitting in a room at night with one 75 Watt light bulb the quality is medium. However, in daylight the quality is great. Overall I feel that I got great value for my money. This is a perfect product for the simple webcam/netmeeting user.
