Editorial Reviews:

This magazine is aimed at the fly-fishing consumer. Editorial emphasis is on conservation, in-depth equipment reviews, fly fishing travel, and the sporting way of life. The magazine reflects the fly fisherman's approach to his or her sport-an awareness of game fish, their habitat, and tackle.

Summary: writing counts!
Comment: Fly Rod and Reel has always struck me as the "literary" general interest fly fishing magazine. The writing tends to be of a higher quality than other magazines and the regular features by John Gierach are often worth the price of admission themselves. While many of the national fly fishing magazines tend to be rather predictable, FR&R will often shake things up. Their product reviews are more than just commercials and the destination pieces attempt to bring out a sense of place, rather than the how, where and when of some genre writing. If I had to offer one criticism, it would be that FR&R tends to concentrate on fishing east of the continental divide. As a west coaster, this can be a bit frustrating, but still, a good read.
