US ROBOTICS 5686E - When it comes to dialup modems, the first name for quality build and cutting edge technology has always been, and remains, US Robotics. This external faxmodem supports both V.92 and V.90 standards. V.92 technology brings three key new features to 56K technology (Modem-on-Hold, Quick Connect and V.PCM Upstream). Includes modem, RJ-11 phone cord, AC adapter, software on manual Compatible with DOS, Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, NT 4.0 & XP Requires RS-232 serial cable (not included)

Customer Rating: Summary: Good Modem Comment: I have used this model modem for years with access control systems and it has always worked great. I am surprised to read so many bad reviews about this modem on here. I have purchased and used at least 6 of them over the years and have not had a problem or issue with any one of them. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a modem but with high speed internet who uses modems anyways?? Back in the 90s I always used USR modems and they worked great and this modem lives up to that.
Customer Rating: Summary: US Robotics V.92 External 56K Faxmodem Comment: I needed it shipped overnight, ordered it by 5:pm and received it the follwing afternoon as promised. It's working great.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great modem for the price Comment: Just installed this modem (USR5686E) on a Windows 2000 laptop. In less than 5 minutes, I was connected @49.2K, which is very good in my neighborhood where the phone lines are 1950's vintage. I have several of these USRobotics external modems on both Windows and Linux machines and have never had a bit of trouble with them. I'll try it one a Windows XP machine next.
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't Buy This Item, Better Ones Out There Comment: I bought my modem about 3 weeks ago after the original one in my computer quit. For the first couple of weeks it was great, relatively quick initial connection and pages seemed to load more faster and more smoothly. However, in just the past 24 hours the speaker that lets me hear the modem function has quit with no reason or indication showing in the diagnostics that there was a problem and the initial connection time has slowed down.
The troubleshooting information is difficult to follow, I had a lot of problems installing the driver and to be honest there are better, more reliable brands out there that don't cost as much as this one. Very, very disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: US ROBOTICS V.92 EXTERNAL 56K FAXMODEM Comment: I am really diaappointed with this modem. It does not live up to is advertising features. The settings changs without notice even though they have been saved to modem. This modem is slower than the internal modem I replaced. This modem was supposed to allow me to take a calls while online but that feature does not work even with the upgrades I received from the manufacturer's web site. The upgraded specified for this modem were not helpful. I also found out that V.92 is not supported by my ISP. This modem was a step back into the 90"s.
