Customer Rating: Summary: Past its prime... Comment: The first thing that should stand out to you is the user manual's setup instructions for Windows 98 users. This was probably a great soundcard back in those days, but it just doesn't measure up today.
I bought this card for it's MIDI capabilities, which it performs exceptionally well, but the card is easily overloaded by heavy onscreen graphics resulting in stutters, skips, and pops. When I'm not using this card for MIDI, I have to disable it and use the integrated soundcard that came with my system.
This is a decent card for the price if you need MIDI ports, but if you're going to use this for gaming or even watching visualizations with Windows Media Player or Winamp, you should steer clear.
For the record, my system specs are:
Dell XPS 410
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
2.40GHz Dual Core
2 GB RAM
Customer Rating: Summary: Product has compatibility issue Comment: I purchased this sound card in hope of getting better sound quality from my PC, after reading several favorable reviews on Amazon.
Unfortunately, I should have paid more attention to the negative comments mentioned by a few reviewers. First of all, it's true that M-Audio did not include a software driver for the card in the package. This is either sloppy or lacking any sense of customer satisfaction. You need to go to the website to download the XP driver. Secondly, the card simply did not work properly on my computer; the sound was staticky and wobbly, as if the sound card was unable to lock at the correct frequency. Running any application when playing music cause the sound to deteriorate further. This did not help after I disabled hardware acceleration and all other potentially interfering drivers as recommended in the manual. After spending 2 days trouble-shooting the problems, i realized that a good product should not require its users to go through so much troubles.
I don't know how a company can ship an technically inferior product like this and hope to achieve commercial success. I returned the card to Amazon and will not consider ever purchasing another M-Audio sound card.
Customer Rating: Summary: M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Comment: I purchased the M-Audio sound card via Amazon a month or so ago. I'm in New Zealand and the transaction was seamless and delivery was prompt with excellent tracking facilities.
The M-Audio is a great sound card which I'm using in conjunction with Nuendo and Reason. This card seems to be compatable with these programms, my Dell dimension E520 and Windows XP. The M-Audio control is straight forward. The fun starts now !

Customer Rating: Summary: Vista Drivers Now Available Comment: Several older reviews of this card report that there are no drivers for Windows Vista. That is no longer true. M-Audio has just released a 32 bit Vista driver on their website. I downloaded and installed it the other day and it works perfectly. After you install it, just remember to select the M-Audio card as your default playback device (you can do this from the Windows Control Panel) and reboot your machine.
As far as sound quality goes, this card just demolishes anything else I've used to connect my computer to my stereo. During the interval between installing Vista on my computer and M-Audio's release of the driver I experimented with connecting my iPod through my preamp. The sound was okay, but it was noticeably lacking in spaciousness and frequency range compared to this card. I tried the iPod all sorts of ways -- through the headphone port and through a docking station, and through a direct connection from the docking port to preamp. I even used lossless compression. The sound was still disappointing.
You can buy more expensive audiophile network devices that allow you to send music from your PC to your stereo (see the offerings from Logitech), but for the money I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this card. And now that you can use it with Vista, there's no reason to be afraid of giving it a try.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Hi-Fi card Comment: I installed this card in my computer mainly to receive classical music radio streams from around the world. My computer is connected to my high end stereo system and the sound quality is excellent! Great sound card at a very affordable price.
