Summary: A great literary magazine
Comment: Packed full of almost 200 pages of short stories Glimmer Train, published quarterley, has publishes established authors like Ha Jin and Jamaica Kincaid and new voices alike. The stories are well selected and the journal is handsomely produced and unpretentious. A great buy!

Summary: Wonderful Short Fiction, My Favorite Small Journal
Comment: I have subscribed to Glimmer Train, off an on, for several years now. I have found it to be a great source of wonderful short fiction. On some occasions, in fact, I have found authors that I liked so much that I went out and bought their books. In this sense, Glimmer Train does a great job of cluing you in on new authors who may soon have best sellers (or at least wonderful compilations). Because Glimmer Train focuses on authors who aren't famous, you could think of it as indy-publishing.

This journal, which is released quarterly, focuses on short fiction (and usually an interview). Their territory tends to be "traditional" literary fiction. "Literary" in that it focuses on stories of people and relationships (no science fiction, fantasy, horror or "romance"). (Although, there are occasional stories with supernatural hints (magic realism)and there's been some good comic writing as well.) And I mean "traditional" in the sense that most of these stories are not cross-disciplinary (ie: fiction meets post-modernism of fiction meets semiotics) or "experimental" works. They tend to be, more or less, plain-told stories.

I have subscribed to a number of other small journals, including The Journal, The Missouri Review, the Mid-American Review and the Massachusetts Review and I can honestly say that while all those are good, Glimmer Train remains my long-term favorite.

I would recommend this for anyone who likes good, traditional, literary storytelling with excellent and thought-provoking details, and memorable characters. Great for public transportation readers, MFA types, indy-writers, librarians, English majors and people who love the short stories in the New Yorker.

Summary: Treasure trove of new fiction
Comment: Whether you are an aspiring or veteran writer or a fan of fiction, this is a bright light among literary journals.
