Summary: Extend Your Lifespan
Comment: Life Extension is a monthly health magazine brought to you by the Life Extension Organization. Unlike most other magazines, this one is run by a not- for- profit organization. Membership isn't a requirement to get the magazine, but anyone who signs up for a membership will automatically receive the magazine as part of the deal. This publication is intended for those who want to get serious about improving their health and it offers many tips and remedies for fighting common diseases and extending one's life span.

Even if you don't join the foundation, you will find the magazine itself is worth the cost of a subscription if good health is your goal. This publication relies on literally thousands of sources to compile its information each month. It offers advice on vitamin and mineral supplements, cancer- reducing foods, ways to protect against heart disease, proven methods to reduce the risk of diabetes, and many other helpful tips from its up- to- date articles.

Life Extension is different from other magazines in several important ways. First, it offers something you don't find in most publications: A list of references after most articles. To give the reader peace of mind and to erase any doubt that the information presented is based on official medical research and advice from the pros, Life Extension includes a long reference list showing exactly where it obtained its facts and figures. The sources can be books, other magazines, medical professionals, web sites, and other places. This makes the magazine a little bit on the cluttered side and it makes it seem like an encyclopedia in some ways. But it is nice to see all of these sources because it adds credibility to the articles.

Life Extension is basically a scientifically- minded magazine and because of this, many of the magazine's articles are technical and dry, full of percentage quotations, biological terms, and medical talk. Some departments, like "Wellness Profile", are a little more personable. But the majority of the articles are more technical and they are not necessarily something you will want to look at for casual reading. They will appeal mostly to people who have a strong interest in the subjects of disease prevention and ways to improve health.

One other difference with Life Extension is that it starts out immediately with a table of contents. You don't have to flip through ten to twenty pages of opening advertisements, like you often do with other magazines. With this publication, the table of contents greets you almost immediately, showing the month's featured reports and the monthly departments. You don't need to frustrate yourself looking for the contents. It's right there, when you open up the magazine.

Advertisements cover only about 25 to 30 percent of the pages of each issue of Life Extension. And almost all of the ads are for Life Extension's own product line. You see, Life Extension is more than just a magazine and a health foundation- it is also a manufacturer of assorted herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other health supplements. It even makes its own brand of toothpaste and sells products for pets. Each issue ends with several pages of order blanks to purchase these many products from Life Extension (and a few products from other manufacturers, too). If you are interested in buying these products and plan to purchase a large amount, you might want to consider joining the foundation first because you will get a discount on each and every thing you buy.

Overall, Life Extension is a good magazine about maintaining optimal health through proper diet. This magazine isn't very personal in nature and it often resembles a reference guide more than a magazine. But it does offer some good, timely articles about disease prevention, dietary supplements, and medical advances. Health professionals and those with an active interest in longer, healthier living will enjoy this magazine most but most everyone can benefit by reading Life Extension. It offers some simple ways to improve your health and add years to your life with minimal effort.

Summary: Too bad, it looked so good.
Comment: I was very happy to see this magazine in the stands, as I'm very actively interested in the science of life extension.

Unfortunately-- when you open this magazine up, you're met with a combination of scant articles with longer reference lists than actual content and severely ingrained advertisements. Judge the article-based content as you will, but pay close attention and you'll notice that the same people that make the magazine are selling multiple products. That is NOT a good sign for scientific objectivity. I saw what appeared to be a pseudo-article advertisement as many companies do, but in this magazine it was not marked with "ADVERTISEMENT" in the header or footer. Or anywhere.

I threw the magazine away without reading anymore, because I simply do not have the time to sort through potentially biased information riddled with commercial intentions to determine what is true and what is set there to move a product.

My advice is to stay away from this magazine.

Summary: ¿?¿ is aging a disease controlled by only few genes¿?¿
Comment: There are 2 types of Life Extension members (and employees for that matter).. The first make up the majority- an unfortunate 99% ... the remaining 1% are the true visionaries from`all walks of life with no concept of aging as 'necessary'. The latter will continue to search for the cure of the ultimate 'mother disease'-human aging. The newest breakthrough as of winter 2004 is the finding that the not well known antioxidant reservatrol found in grapes extended the lifespan of yeast up to 70% and, like metformin (although not quite as powerful), triggers many of the effects of caloric restriction (cutting your calories is the only known/proven method of reversing human aging. Dr. Eric Braverman and his breakthrough genius discovery of 'brain mapping' adds to all of this, and his book "The Edge Effect" is required no ifs ands or buts reading. At the inner core of the Life Extension Foundation resides Project 2020... the goal: nothing less than the complete cure for aging by that year. Also check out Alcor© and Biomarker©, both closely associated with this company. The top reccommendations by this Life Extension Member are V.I.B.E. Technologies of Colorado - (Vibemachine.com) and Barbara Brennan School of Healing-which is what cured me (etheric energy healing founded by a NASA scientist (BarbaraBrennan.com))-, and finally we have 'the doc' William Von Peters uncurable.com- Between these 3 any known/unknown condition has no chance. If you experience any results please mail me =o)

Summary: CUTTING EDGE INFO
Comment: I have been reading Life Extension Magazine, published by Life Extension Foundation, for over seven years. It is still the best source of cutting edge information on longevity, food and natural hormone supplementation and natural protocols for preventing and treating disease.

This magazine first introduced me to the benefits of natural hormones like DHEA, Pregnenolone and Melatonin plus nutritional supplements such as N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC), Alpha Lipoic Acid, SAMe and DMAE, Soy Extracts and many others.

In addition, I first learnt about Phytochemicals (those substances in plants that provide the color, including flavonoids, flavonols, proanthocyandins, carotenes, terpenes and thiols) and their health benefits on these pages. It is the best source of information on all of the anti-oxidants.

The magazine often runs interviews with longevity experts and researchers and regularly carries articles investigating the side-effects of allopathic medicines. All articles are backed by references from clinical trials and laboratory research.

The articles are always well written and researched and the news section is always very up to date with the latest research findings. In short, if you're determined to lead a quality life, remain in your prime and retain a young biological age (as opposed to chronological age), Life Extension is the best magazine by far.

If I have a criticism, it is perhaps that Life Extension Magazine tends to concentrate on natural substances like vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, herbs and natural hormones rather than anti-ageing drugs like Eldepryl (Deprenyl), Cimetidine, Vinpocetine and good old Aspirin, although once again, I first read about these medicines on these pages.

Each issue contains Reports, News, Questions and Answers sections and valuable Medical Abstracts, where one can find the very latest research results on various natural substances and their efficacy in treating various ailments.

For those interested in leading a quality life, effective supplementation and longevity, I would also like to recommend the following books: Renewal: The Anti-Aging Revolution by Dr. Timothy J. Smith, The Superhormone Promise by Carol Colman and William Regelson, Stopping the Clock: Longevity for the New Millenium by Dr. Ronald Klatz and the work of Dr. Ray Sahelian, a leading supplement researcher.
