Comment: I ordered this (as I'm sure many people do) to salvage a laptop drive. It worked well. I was able to pull out my 2.5" HD and stick it in this enclosure then pull the files off over USB. I was the least expensive way to accomplish what I needed to accomplish.
The enclosure comes with a USB data cable and a second USB power cable.
The enclosure is not something I would ever consider using to turn a 2.5" drive into a portable HD. The case is simply not tough enough for that kind of use.
I didn't even put the silver enclosure back over my drive to use it. I just used the end-plate to adapt the drive over to USB and pulled my files. After the fact I wanted to put on the enclosure to protect the drive for storage and found that the little screws included for this were a bit hard to work with.
Bottom line: need to connect a drive via USB this is a cheap and effective way of doing so.

Comment: I purchased this unit to use an old laptop drive as a backup unit and portable data drive. The unit works very well and I have had no problems using it with old or new systems that have win98 up to and including win xp pro.

Comment: I own this for quote some time but of no use.
The made is cheap and the USB power sources really are not working. This was not able to get my old laptop HD working on any of 4 other laptops i tried. Don't waste your money but buy something that comes with an external power source.

Comment: For those looking for a short term method of accessing an old laptop HD this item works as advertised. I plugged in the HD from my old university laptop and it was quickly recognized by my PC. I backed up everything important and then cleared the drive using some freeware security software without any trouble.
My only real complaint is that the device requires two cables to operate. One cable is a power source while the other is the transfer method. I'm confident I can use the drive case and old HD as a backup or transport drive but the extra cable is a bit annoying.
Having said all that - it's a great device that works as advertised.
