Customer Rating: Summary: Have been biting my nails my whole life Comment: I am a college student who has been biting my fingernails as long as I can remember. I have always hated that I do it but have never been able to stop, it seems that I do it when I'm idle (during movies, class etc). I have used stuff I put on my nails before but it never deterred me enough. When I got this stuff in the mail I put it on right away, a few hours later when I went to bite my nails I got just about the worst taste imaginable. Lets just say that the taste is so bad that when you even have the slightest thought of biting your nail you cringe. My nails are the longest they have been since I can remember and this product works great. If you have been doing it for a long time and are having trouble quitting I really suggest this stuff. I love not being self conscious about my nails. Customer Rating: Summary: Good for kids over 3. Not so good for 2 year olds. Comment: Let me start by saying this product is wonderful for my 6 year old and my 3 year old. My 6 year old has sucked her thumb for years and nothing has stopped her from sucking her thumb until we tried this. She does not like the taste so it stops her from sucking her thumb even at night. I know that I need to reapply it when she starts sucking her thumb again. My 3 year old sucked his thumb and bit his nails until they bled. He stopped biting his nails and sucking his thumb if we applied it every other day like instructed. If I see him biting his nails, that usually means that I forgot to reapply it.
The reason that I only gave it 4 stars was because I tried it with my 2 year old twins who suck their fingers. As soon as I applied it and it dried, they put their fingers in their mouth. Once they tasted it they both started crying and vomited. It took us a long time to calm them down and they kept putting their fingers back in their mouth and it started all over again.
My advice is to wait until they are 3 and they can make the connection that when I put my fingers in my mouth it will taste bad, so I need to stop putting my fingers in my mouth. My 3 year old understood and it was wonderful for him. Customer Rating: Summary: m.mayo Comment: Mavala Stop was recommended by our daughter's orthodontists. It is amazing. I have tried the thumb guards, Thum, and everything out there to help my daughter stop sucking her thumb. Within two weeks of using Mavala Stop, she stopped completely! It is a wonderful product and I can't say enough about it. We have been thumb sucking free for two months and going strong! I have been telling everyone who has a child that sucks there thumb or fingers to try this stuff. Customer Rating: Summary: Didn't work for us!! Comment: After all of the great reviews I thought for sure this would help my 9 year old son stop biting his nails. It worked for maybe a week and he was right back to it. The taste no longer bothers him - so for our family, it was a waste of time and money. Customer Rating: Summary: tastes bad, but not bad enough to deter my 4 year old... Comment: Our four-year-old son has sucked his thumb since day one. We are very concerned about this and have tried various methods to get him to stop.
After reading the many glowing reviews of this product on this and other websites, we decided to try it.
The first thing we noticed about the product we received was that it looked and smelled like acetone or nail polish remover. Alarmed, we contacted our dentist and pediatrician, both of whom advised us that the smell comes from solvents in the product which evaporate after application and should not pose a risk. With some trepidation, we decided to try the product anyway. The next things we noticed were that the product seemed to wear off rather quickly with our son and that he was willing to put up with the residual taste at prime thumb-sucking time (such as when he was tired).
Concerned about the frequency of application required, we then contacted the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research to see if they had any information about the product. The FDA informed us it has not evaluated the product for safety or efficacy and advised us to submit a MedWatch Report for possible follow-up investigation. The official who responded to our inquiry seemed concerned about the solvents and alcohol that form the main ingredients of this product.
Note that the FDA official did not indicate that the product was necessarily dangerous. However, the official did seem to think that further investigation was warranted. For the record, our son does not seem to have suffered any ill effects after 4 days of use.
My son was recently promoted to the "big kids" class at his pre-school, and we're very anxious about the physical and social effects of his thumb-sucking. We're as eager as anyone to find a magic bullet to fix this problem, but we have concluded that using alcohol and solvents of unknown efficacy and safety is too high a risk. Note too that because the product is made in Switzerland, holding its makers accountable for any adverse effects that might occur would be difficult. Before using this product, you may want to ask yourself whether you want your kids to be guinea pigs for the untested products of a foreign chemical company.
