The DVI Detective is a new device that reads and stores a computer's digital video information (EDID) in order to simplify the installation process for users who are extending a digital projector or plasma display away from the computer. --Once installed and connected, the DVI Detective continually transmits the EDID to the computer, essentially "tricking" the computer into thinking that the video is present, even when it is not connected. The user can then disconnect the display, place it in a remote location and reconnect it, without rebooting the operating system. The entire installation process benefits from the DVI Detective, which utilizes a much smaller cable that requires fewer connections; it makes life easier for those extending digital displays or projectors. An inconspicuous device that weighs less than three pounds, the DVI Detective connects to the ADC or DVI port on one side, and to a DVI extension module or cable on the other. It works with all digital displays (DVI) as well as Apple's line of flat panel displays (ADC). --What is EDID? EDID - Extended Display Identification Data is a VESA standard data format that contains basic information about a monitor and its capabilities, including vendor information, maximum image size, color characteristics, factory pre-set timings, frequency range limits, and character strings for the monitor name and serial.

Customer Rating: Summary: Works Great Comment: Works great in our professional Aerospace application.
I use it with a KVM switch to share one monitor between multiple computers, and this little "gem" spoofs the NVidia drivers on each computer into thinking the main monitor is always hooked up, and therefore doesn't lamely try to "configure the main display out" in lieu of our TV-OUT simulator displays at bootup (a situation which would cause more problems than one can imagine).
This product is a real "design saver".
Customer Rating: Summary: DVI Detective Works as advertised Comment: I use an XP with dual monitors and MAC machine. I also have the Geffen DVI switcher. Before getting this, everytime I booted the XP, I had to reconfigure my dual monitors, which was time consuming and a pain.
Works great.
