The Igbo people in Eastern Nigeria makes these seed rattles from the pit of the uyot fruit, which looks like a big pear. The pit is carved open when it is fresh and the insides are removed before it is dried in the sun, making its shell hard and resonant. For many years the uyot seed has been used for a variety of rattles, used by Nigerians when dancing in festivals and masquerades. Often 10 or more people will use the rattles as they dance together, keeping the same rhythm. Experiment to discover the variety of sounds you can achieve - shake the rattle for louder sounds, or run your fingers through the seeds for a different effect. Great for drum circles! Remember, this rattle is made from natural materials so it will need to be handled with care.
