Customer Rating: Summary: All That and More Comment: I love this unit. I made sure I did my research before buying this. I'm glad I did I read most of the reviews and was glad I purchased this. This is made best for gameplay, don't turn the vloume up it just might blow your head off.(its that loud) I saw that the price for this went up 2 weeks after i bought it. Originally 75.00 bucks used but for me it was worth it. So if your looking for something good at a reasonable price def. check out this item its worth it for sure.
Customer Rating: Summary: great value Comment: I got mine for $90 with shipping on big auction site a year and a half ago. That's not much more than logitech's 70 watt offering, and at that price it makes sense to get these. I think those were about $50-$60 at the time. These are not better than cheap home theater speakers, but they're much better than most computer speakers. They get pretty loud without noticeably distorting, and they have a lot of bass, which is good enough for most people. I did notice what seemed to be a gap between the satellites and the sub. The mids didn't seem strong as they should, but it is a lot better than most computer speakers. Cheaper sets rely on the sub to play mids.
Some people note that the bass is overpowering and muddy. This is very noticeable when I have it under my desk, and it's not much better when I have it in a corner. I think it's actually best when I have out in the middle of my room, it's much clearer and more balanced. It's probably the bandpass enclosure that makes the bass stronger. It also is probably what makes the bass somewhat unclear even when I have it out of corners and desks. The satellites I thought could be more powerful in relation to the sub. There's ports on them, but they're fake. It would probably be better if they had a direct firing sub. Despite all this, it sounds pretty good for movies and it's far better than the 2.1 that came with my computer before. I'm sure it's good for games.
I started to smell burning recently when I turned it up at high volumes. It never happened before, and I didn't have it up for longer than other times. I don't know how much it was used before I bought it, since it was refurbished. I don't smell anything when I have it up halfway or a little more for hours at a time, however. I'd assume if it was new, there wouldn't be this problem, or it would take longer to arise. Oh well. I still feel it's a good value.
This product is discontinued now. There is no replacement for it yet. There's an intermediate system, the G51, but it's less powerful. I don't know how that sounds. The satellites have separate drivers though. If they die out on me, I might get the z-5500, since it's about $200 now, and it sometimes dips under. You should order it from an online computer company that has a lot of product placement on TV and movies; they usually have free shipping. Or maybe when I save up I might get a cheap home theater in a box, which even at $300 is yet a better value than computer speakers.
Some of my friends have with Klipsch GMX 2.1s. They sound better, probably because of better satellites that have separate tweeters instead of one driver for mids and highs, and bigger woofers. They also have much wider imaging; the z-5300s are much more directional. They sound better to me. Part of it could be the different music we listen to, but they clearly have a wider sound stage. The only problem is a noticeable hiss when nothing plays, on two different sets. This looks like a common problem on the user reviews. The z-5300s get louder though, don't hiss, and are still a better value. At the time, they were easier to find at low prices on ebay. I'd probably go with Klipsch Promedia instead of the GMX if I was getting 2.1 speakers; they're supposed to be more powerful and have better reviews.
Customer Rating: Summary: Only 4 stars and this is why.... Comment: I purchased these little guys a few years ago and took them back after 24 hours and this is why.
First of all, very nice speakers as far as sounding. Logitech makes nothing short of the best merchanidse. However, the rear speakers are more like side speakers. If the room your placing these speakers in is small you may be okay, but in large rooms you will be diappointed. This is becuase each speaker has wired cables (versus normal speaker wire). This was a major hinderance in my opinion.
Another thing I disliked was the wired remote. I now have the Logitech 5500 series and they have a wireless remote and normal speaker wire. So for that reason, I can only give these guys a 4 out of 5 rating. If you're going to pay this much money for speakers, I would get more for your money and upgrade further.
Customer Rating: Summary: LOUD!!! Comment: This system is a great value for this price. I purchased mine years ago for about $200, and I would probably pay that again today for the quality it gives. I've hooked this thing up to both my pc and my dvd player for years now and haven't had any problems, except that the neighbors complain about the noise. Super powerful bass!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great computer speakers, even better price! Comment: I've owned these speakers for about 6 months now and haven't been disappointed. I really wanted to spring for Logitechs digital Z-5500's but couldn't pass up the deal I found for these.
These go on sale quite often, and normally you can find them with a hefty mail in rebate. I got my setup for $48! Thats an absolute steal for these speakers. At the time the z5500's were selling for over $300 so it was a no brainer for me.
I have these setup in my computer room which is fairly small. These cables are color coded and extremely easy to setup. The only drawback is the shorter length of the rear speakers. I never actually measured them but they seem to be around 15ft. That isn't that long when you want to mount them on a rear wall and try to hide the wires. I went online and purchased an RCA cable extension for like $2 and was good to go!
The included hand held volume adjuster acts as the main control hub. You can adjust the volume, the subwoofer, fade, etc from there. It will also integrate into your soundcard with no problem. I set the volume to %75 on the actual Logitech module, then use my Logitech mouse or keyboard to control the volume through my soundcard. It's much more convienant rather than reaching for the wired Logitech module. This way I can just tuck it away out of sight.
I had to do quite a bit of tweaking to get them to sound how I wanted. The trouble is not all sources sound the same. Once I find a good setting for movies I find that I need to readjust things when I listen to music. This more has to do with your soundcard though and adjusting bass, treble,EQ, etc.
One pet peeve of mine is that this is not digital. I knew that going in but I really do wish I had opted for true 5.1 DD surround sound. This setup does a good job of simulating surround from a stereo source but I find the rear speakers a bit lacking. Even when I turn the rear speaker volume up it just doesn't sound quite right. With true digital 5.1 different sounds are actually coming from different speakers. With these the same sound is just spread across all speakers but the rear speakers always seem less powered/muffled/low.
The bass on this system is definitely on the strong side. I actually think it makes things sound muffled when even at %50. After lowering the bass on the module and tweaking my soundcard settings I got it to sound just right. It still shakes the room, but doesn't have that muffled effect.
So while theres definitely some minor annoyances with this system it just can't be beat for the price when on sale. It all depends on what price it's at when you go to purchase. Right now I see Amazon charging $156 for these and only $199 for the Z-5500's! I would certainly, without a doubt, spend the extra $44 and get true digital surround sound. (If your soundcard supports digital of course!)
