Editorial Reviews:

The Thera Cane is a deep pressure massage device which can be used to gently massage tender points in the muscles. The user can easily massage any part of the body by using one of the six strategically placed projections. A minimal amount of arm movement and gentle pressure is all that is needed for effective treatment. Each Thera Cane comes with a fully illustrated instructional manual (Thera Cane Video also available and sold separately). The Thera Cane weighs one pound and is made of durable, fiberglass material.

Summary: Thera Cane is awesome!
Comment: It really works! I have tight knots in my upper back around the shoulders and the TheraCane is the only thing I've found that will releive the pressure. I tried tennis balls but they were clumsy and hard to put in the exact spot needed. I think the TheraCane is definitely worth the money. Love it!

Comment: TheraCane Trigger Point Massage Tool with Free Training ManualI have a frozen shoulder and since using the TheraCane with direction from a book on trigger points I have experienced greater range of motion and less pain.

Summary: A useful tool for self-help of myofascial pain
Comment: As others have already noted, the Thera Cane is a simple bar which is easy to hold - in various ways - such that you can place pressure on specific points of your back, neck, shoulders, etc. in a manner which feels almost organic, yet would otherwise be extremely difficult to reach without such a device.

It's a well-designed shape; the included manual provides solid suggestions for how to hold the cane for optimal contact with different areas of your body. After getting the gist of what the manual tries to impart, I've essentially let my hands and the cane find what works best for reaching and pressing out my pain areas.

In addition to using one arm as a pivot and the other to pull/push on the cane as a lever, it's also quite easy to reach most of my trigger points - upper to mid back - by leaning backwards onto the Thera Cane while it's pinned against my seatback at the computer. In the latter case, my arms don't need to work much - only stabilize the cane as my upper body weight (while sitting back) provides all the force needed to work a trigger point or similar area.

** It's not a miracle cure ** I have Myofascial Pain Syndrome and see a Physical Therapist regularly, among other things to treat the overall condition.

However, the Thera Cane has actually given me a self-help capability which has provided a few important things since falling into chronic myofascial pain:

1. I can often work my trigger points between therapy sessions in such a way that reliance on prescribed drugs (e.g., muscle relaxers, NSAIDs, etc.) has been cut noticeably. I usually work the cane before taking any drugs when myofascial pain flares up, and often end up with enough lessening of the pain to continue on with my activities.

2. It allows me to easily identify locations of new or still-prominent trigger points for when I next see my Physical Therapist or MD.

3. Unexpectedly, I have more confidence in being able to manage this condition than before using the Thera Cane. Stretching, exercise, etc. all help, but they each have their uses and limits. This simply adds to your stock of what you can do to help yourself.

I take the cane with me to homes of friends and relatives during regular visits - to work in a quiet place, as necessary. It's never been a bother or seemed weird to those folks, especially since they know I'm simply trying to get beyond - and, at least cope - with this syndrome.

Best $29 I've spent in years.

[ meta-comment to Amazon: I've seen a good number of helpful reviews here and most are being rated as Not Helpful to a surprising degree - makes no sense to me ]

Comment: After reading many of the reviews, I thought I had found heaven. Having back issues, knots and you name it; I wondered why there was no product out there for self back help. I came to find out, there was; Theracane.

It does work and does help. I guess the reviews were a little almighty for me, but it beats $80.00 massages every two weeks!
