Customer Rating: Summary: Works great Comment: Works as advertised, we use it with fresh parmesan all the time. Easy to clean.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not very good for people with small hands Comment: I found it was easy to take apart and clean, but using it is a little bit awkward. In order to create enough pressure to grate quickly, I have to hold it higher up than it was designed (because my hands are smaller/weaker than it was designed for?) If I hold it like designed, the cheese isn't pressed into the grater as well and it takes a very long time to grate. This is my first parmesan grater of this style, so I don't know if other brands would have the same problem or not for me. I imagine it would easier for people with bigger/stronger hands.
Customer Rating: Summary: zyliss cheese grater Comment: This is a replacement for one we wore out after many years. The new one is even better & has a thicker plastic, so I'm sure it will last even longer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't load cheese near the handle Comment: This product is very easy to use, simple to disassemble, and it does do a good job grating cheese - but with one problem. If you load the entirety of the hopper, the cheese that's grated in the back of the drum near the handle mashes together and gets stuck in a big glob. I had to soak the drum for awhile to get it out! And since the drum is so small, it's not as if you can really get anything in there to clean it out.
This means I only stick small chunks of cheese towards the front now, and the uneven pressure on the plastic handle worries me. I'm not sure how long it will last.
Bottom line: a flat cheese grater is just about as fast (since you don't have to bother cutting the cheese into smaller chunks!), less wasteful (you don't have to guess how much cheese you want to cut, just stop grating when you have enough - plus the amount of cheese wastes and stuck in the drum) and far easier to clean up. Sure, it takes a bit more elbow grease, but I consider that my daily exercise, and an excuse for an extra serving of cheese...
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good (and fun!) for hard cheese grating Comment: It's a lot of fun and very simple using this to very quickly shred a little parmesan over plates of fresh pasta and salad, restaurant style! I agree with another review that this does a great job with parmesan cheese, but I've tried grating some other slightly softer cheese with it and it just flattened and smeared it all over the drum. It may have worked ok if I'd lubed the drum with some cooking oil, but I wouldn't want to do that. I really got it specifically for hard grating cheeses anyway (like mature fontina -- nothing else I've found works very well for that).
If you enjoy cooking and trying new gadgets to make it more interesting, this one is perfect for hard cheese grating, especially parm. Have fun with it!
