Customer Rating: Summary: Couldn't be easier Comment: Opened the box, plugged in, turned on: works without any problems. I was very satisfied with how easy installation and setup were. I have several desktops, laptops, and other devices on a wired network now connected to this switch and an SMC firewall/router/print spooler. Everything was up and running in a matter of minutes. Nothing is perfect, though: I had one issue with one laptop trying to print through the spooler. I replaced one of the cables and set MTU on the laptop to 1500 and all was well. I don't attribute this to the DLink switch but instead to bad karma.
Customer Rating: Summary: Killed my net connection speeds Comment: I bought and installed this switch when the previous 5-port D-Link gigabit switch I had in place died. (I also kind of needed the extra ports anyway so the death was a little fortuitous.) As soon as I plugged it in, I saw a dramatic reduction in speeds to the Internet. LAN speeds were fine but WAN download speeds went from >10MBit/s to <2MBit/s. Oddly, upload speeds were unaffected.
Several hours of diagnostics and the only hitch appeared to be the new switch. Thinking I had a bad product, I returned it and got a new one. Same problem. Went out and bought a Linksys switch (model: SD2008), plugged it in, problem solved.
I've been a dedicated D-Link user for years but I'm thinking of giving that up. The 5-port switch I was replacing was just over a year old and the one before that (also D-Link) had all kinds of connectivity issues. It's an unmanaged switch, it should just work!
Anyways, I gave it 3 stars because there's a possibility that I got two bad boxes in a row (there are far too many good reviews here) and the LAN speeds were great. If you buy one, make sure you can take it back easily.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Switch Comment: This does exactly what it's supposed to do. It works right out of the box in a mixed environment (10/100 mbps and 10/100/1000 mbps) without any loss of performance. Sometimes in a very quiet room you can hear it working, but not really noticeable.
Customer Rating: Summary: Got Me Back Online Comment: We had a Linksys router that took a hit when lightning struck near our house. Also, a tv, the Time Warner cable modem and two computers got more energy than they could handle and promptly quit working(yes, all were on surge protectors). Initially I purchased a Netgear switch and although it was supposed to send the signal by wire 100 meters, it couldn't send it 100 feet. Netgear has never responded to my questions about repair/replacement in the three year warranty. Upon looking into wired routers and switches more fully I noticed that D-Link seemed to have many high ratings and so purchased a wired router and this gigabit switch. The support staff answered questions for me before the purchase and gave me information regarding the Netgear (which now sits in a box-unused).
The D-Link wired router and switch arrived the same day from Amazon and in less than 10 minutes we were back in business. No problem for the switch to send signal to my detached office/workshop and absolutely no glitches, failures or surprises. They simply work and work very well!
Customer Rating: Summary: Works well, right out of the box Comment: probably the simplest networking item I've ever dealt with. Power it up, plug in the network cables and away you go.
It recognizes the different speeds of the various connections.
This box is supposed to be environmentally friendly but it shows a flashing connection to PC's that are completely powered down, doesn't make a lot of sense.
