Editorial Reviews:

Yusuf's (formerly Cat Stevens) first album of modern pop songs since 1978's Back to Earth. On his return to music, Yusuf says "I feel right about making music and singing about life in this fragile world again. It is important for me to help bridge the cultural gaps others are sometimes frightened to cross."

Summary: Uplifting Mindful music to brighten my day
Comment: It's good for me to carve out some time each day to center myself and set seeds of positive thoughts. It's good to remember what is most important in life. In my dreams, I can fly, skimming treetops and city skylines. It's life that can weigh and pull me down. I love this beautiful music when taking a walk, in the car, or lying in bed. How rare it is to find inspiring, positive and prayerful music these days. In this busy world you can relax your racing mind with his music. I also love the spoken word audio & music tracks on his site mountainoflight.co.uk (Mountain of Light Audio Player)... yeah Peace Train.. some day it's going to com...and take me home again! "Why can't we live in bliss" says Yusef!!!!! I love his music!

Summary: I wish there was more music by this great man.
Comment: I was initially wary of purchasing this CD. I thought that maybe Cat Stevens' conversion to Islam would have some negative effect on his music. I guess I believed that the music would be preachy and inaccessible.
In retrospect I was being short-sighted.
This is a wonderful CD full of the type of truly heartfelt, passionate music I love this man for.
I highly recommend it.
If you've mourned the loss of 20+ years of Islam's(Stevens) inspiring, soulful music, buy this now!

Summary: worth getting by all his old fans
Comment: I haven't listened to any of his Islamic devotional recordings and I was hoping this would be a return of the Cat Stevens I know and love from such recordings as Tea for the Tillerman. It is! Not that it's as strong as those early recordings but it's still in the same ballpark--and that's a wonderful, magical ballpark. There was a lot of restless energy and dissatisfaction in those early recordings i.e. "Father and Son" or "Hard Headed Woman." That is gone. He is now a contented fellow who "loves to see the kids playing in the rain." But his heart is the same, and his special musical gift has not been revoked.

Summary: A Bit Rusty - But a Welcome Return Nonetheless
Comment: After being out of the mainstream music scene for as many years as Cat...er...Yusuf has been, returning with a classic was probably a bit much to ask for. This isn't a bad album - but it's also not wholly original. Fans will notice one complete remake, "I Think I See the Light" from Cat's debut album "Mona Bone Jakon" as well a partial remake - "Heaven / Where True Love Goes" which recasts parts of the "Foreigner Suite". There is also a cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". Cat / Yusuf is clearly trying to tell us something about that little Salman Rushdie mix-up some year's back. It's no accident that this particular song was selected to be covered.

The original material is uneven. The opening track "Midday (Avoid City After Dark) and "Maybe There's a World" are the highlights. Two additional tracks are short spoken word pieces set to a backdrop of subtle far-eastern guitar sounds. The rest are neither terrible nor remarkable.

Excluding the remakes, the cover, and the two spoken word poems, we're left with only six tracks of actual new material that can be considered as songs (as opposed to poems set to background music.)

Still, after so long, it's good to have Cat back - even as Yusuf. The best thing about this release is the hope that it may signal a return to songwriting for him, that more and better releases of original material may be coming, and that he's begun the process of working out the songwriting rust.
