Customer Rating: Summary: Great Hard Drive Enclosure Comment: I purchased this enclosure one month ago, I am now purchasing another. Was easy to set up. The only problem I had was the screws were small and my hands didn't want to work. No problem with unit plugged it in and everything was there in my old 250gb hard drive. I am now purchasing another one for my 320gb drive. For the money good deal. Some of the other ones I looked at were more money.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not worth the money because of the fan Comment: First of all, I should point out that this is one of those reviews that are written out of pure frustration.
I have had this enclosure for 7-8 months. I wanted to get an enclosure that was well-built and reliable, even if that came with a high price tag. However, this enclosure doesn't match that description (except for the price tag part).
I had no problem installing my 500GB Samsung drive. I got everything to work within minutes. For the first few months, I didn't run into any problems, and everything worked fine. In the past few weeks, the fan on the drive started making a very noticeable noise. I first thought it was because of dust, but then realized it was due to the lack of oil in the bearings. I decided to oil it myself, but was very disappointed when I opened the enclosure. The fan is facing outwards, so one doesn't have access to the shaft from the inside. Worst of all, the fan is glued to the enclosure instead of being screwed. It is therefore not possible to remove it from the case in order to oil or replace it.
I ended up unplugging the fan, and using the enclosure without it. This is not advisable, as maintaining a low temperature point can dramatically increase the life of a hard-drive. That's why I bought an enclosure with a fan in the first place. Also, there are no other holes on the case, and since everything is very tight, I don't even think the fan would make a difference when it comes to lowering the inside temperature.
All in all, a cheap choice of fan and poor design choices ruined a potentially very good product. I am going to try to return mine, and I wouldn't recommend anyone to use this (unless you want to disable the fan altogether).
Customer Rating: Summary: Well worth the money Comment: Very good stuff here. There is a soft 'rubberized' coating on the outside that makes it grip to anything really well. Performed exceptionally well with a 500GB drive installed. Check your jumpers!
Not much bad to say about this enclosure except the really bright LEDs on the front panel. But I knew this after seeing it for the first time. I have three of these stacked in my bedroom/office. They really light up the place. I have written a tutorial on installing a front panel micro switch to switch the LEDs on and off. [...].
Customer Rating: Summary: H D Enclosure Comment: The enclosure was easy to set up and worked fine. I installed an old hard drive that I wasn't using. The only problem I ran into was the jumper settings on the hard drive. Following the instructions included with the HD enclosure, my computer didn't not pick up hard drive. I kept changing the jumper settings until it worked. I use it as a spare hard drive and only turn it on when I want to use it. I keep some back up files and things like that on it. The lights are handy, they work as a reminder to turn off the drive when not in use.
