Comment: I had to return my harddrive enclosure to Amazon for a refund. The drive enclosure was inoperable upon receipt. I inserted a working laptop hard drive into the enclosure and attempted to utilize it on three different PC's (One a Vista laptop, one an XP laptop, and one an XP desktop). In each instance the operating system could not reconcile the USB connection. I rechecked the hard drive, the setup, etc, and all seemed to be ok. I would be wary of ordering this product.

Comment: Very nicely made product for the money. My son dumped milk on my laptop and fried the power supply. I purchased this to ensure I kept my data. After about 10 minutes, I was up and running. The item comes with software used for the one-touch back-up feature but I'd much rather keep it simple and not use it at all. the magnetic screwdriver was really handy as my fingers are too fat to even pick-up the drive screws.
Overall a great value and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs to put an old notebook drive back to good use.

Summary: Elegant, sturdy permanent enclosure
Comment: I purchased this enclosure a few days ago from Amazon for around $26 -- strangely, it's listed at over $50 for the moment. While that may be too much for this item, I'll review it as if it costs around $25 -- certainly worth it for that money. It's been working beautifully with my Hitachi Travelstar 30GB hard disk (from a defunct HP laptop).
Aluratek has designed a sleek, sturdy, elegant black enclosure with a lot of attention to detail. The packaging comes with all the little screws you need to seal off the enclosure, as well as a "magnetic" screwdriver that fits their tiny size. (The only thing you provide is a regular Phillips screwdriver for 4 of the larger screws that hold the hard disk onto the frame.) There is also an LED to indicate activity, a single-touch backup feature that I haven't used yet, and a wallet to slide your new external hard disk into when traveling.
A few caveats: Because the enclosure is sealed off with screws, this isn't really what you should get if all you intend to do is swap various hard disks in and out of the case. (You could certainly do that without putting in the screws, but the case doesn't "snap" shut tightly enough to carry it around securely with the disk inside like that.) You'll also need to occupy 2 USB ports, which seems standard for these devices (unless you want to use an external power supply, not included). Finally, some of the screws this comes with are SO tiny that -- when you're first sealing your disk shut in the case -- they will keep falling out of your fingers and get lost on the floor. This was annoying, but now that it's done, I won't be revisiting that task again.
All in all, certainly exceeds my expectations.
