Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent mouse for a Bluetooth-equipped computer Comment: I have to admit, I've been wanting one of these mice for over a year now. I've had a Bluetooth-equipped Mac Powerbook for a long time, so I always kept an eye out for a decent Bluetooth mouse. For years, they were always expensive. Then, they became more affordable, but they always included the extra USB dongle I didn't need.
One day, I stumbled across this Kensington mouse in a store, and I fell in love. It's a compact mouse, small enough for travel without being cramped in your hand. Some travel mice are more like trying to use a candy bar to control your computer, while full sized mice are just too bulky to carry with you. The Kensington is just the right compromise. I've found it to be a comfortable fit, and its shape is good for left- or right-handed use.
The battery compartment is the easiest I've ever gotten into. Just squeeze the back sides of the mouse and a door pops open. The way it's built, you won't accidentally open the door just by using the mouse: you have to intentionally hold & squeeze it to open the battery bay. Brilliant!
As for everyday use, I was able to pair it to my Mac without any trouble. I didn't bother installing the included software, as I've never had good luck with mouse software, and no drivers are needed. The only missing functionality is that you can't use the left- and right-tilt of the scroll wheel. In my experience though, it's almost impossible to trigger the tilt without also scrolling the wheel, so I treat it as if that feature didn't even exist.
If you're looking for a Bluetooth travel mouse, I can't rate this one highly enough. Try it on for size in a store if you can, but I'd say this is the mouse for most laptop users.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Mouse Comment: I have had 3 BT mice before and this one is by far the best. The construction and durability is second to none. The batteries last a long time.
Customer Rating: Summary: Decent, but not quite perfect... Comment: This mouse, unlike other bluetooth mice I have owned, actually works very well. The electronics seem very solid (I had a different one that actually had an internal component pop and fry in the first month of use), the radio link rarely needs a hard refresh, and it has a nice dedicated on/off switch. It feels quite good in the hand too; it's a nice size.
I think the switch is a great feature (duh?), and many mice don't have one (they just pseudo-sleep on their own.) My problem with this mouse is the plastic case and feet. The battery compartment is too easy to open, and it will often pop open when you press the mouse "just so" in regular use. Over a year or so of use, the little semi-hard plastic foot pads have worn down to the point that the mouse is almost tacky on the desk surface now, as the feet don't give the case adequate clearance from the desk. They should be thicker or should have hard plastic mounting bosses molded into the case so that you don't end up with the whole under-side of the mouse case sliding on the desk. This is surprisingly annoying and is really making the mouse difficult to use these days.
Further, the dark blue case finish is wearing off rapidly now on the buttons, but I suppose this is no big deal. Unfortunately, I will be forced to replace this mouse soon, as I really need flawless functionality given the time I must spend daily with my head in "the box." I'll probably miss this mouse, but I will probably try a different one next.
Customer Rating: Summary: This mouse is poor quality, heavy, too small, difficult to move around. Comment: I returned this mouse. Why?
- It is cheap quality. I don't know what happened to Kensington, but the last time I bought one of their products (1996 or so, it lasted a long time) they were well-made. This one feels like a child's toy destined to break.
- The size is terrible. It is too small from end to end, and too bulky (top to bottom) at the back end, making it uncomfortable to use.
- It is very heavy and difficult to move around on a mouse pad. My girlfriend's Logitech mouse moves around like a feather. The Kensington feels like a dumptruck by comparison.
I thought this would be an upgrade to the Apple Mighty Mouse that came with my iMac, however this is not the case. I sent back the Kensington and am sticking with the Mighty Mouse for now.
Customer Rating: Summary: Getting frustrated Comment: As far as the bluetooth pairing and the tracking quality, I have to give this mouse a "two-thumbs up". I am currently using this mouse with a Macbook Pro and the Mac has no trouble finding the mouse when I turn it on.
The down side is the poor design of the battery compartment. The very action of slightly squeezing the sides of the mouse releases the battery door. The design is such that the contact springs for the batter are perpetually working against the retention mechanism! there is no way of adjusting the retention strength as the barbs are simply injection molded plastic.
I am a designer and I find that using this mouse for a full day of work requires reassembly on the order of 10-20 times a day. I will be looking for another mouse...
