Editorial Reviews:

The FreeAgent Pro is an external hard drive with a sizable 500GB of storage capacity. What sets it apart from most other external drives is its ability to move that data to where you need it most. Automatically send a project to a flash drive, copy audio to your MP3 player, upload photos to Shutterfly, and put your entire "My Documents" folder on your website for anytime/anywhere access. Those are just a few examples of what FreeAgent Pro can offer you. To keep everything working smoothly, FreeAgent Pro can also perform automatic revisions of your content. Automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups 5-Year Limited Warranty Interfaces - FireWire, USB 2.0 and eSATA PC Requirements - Windows 2000 Pro, XP Home or Pro, or Vista Mac Requirements - Power PC G3, G4, or G5 processor running OS X 10.3.9 (or higher), or Intel Core Duo or Core Solo processor running OS X 10.4.6 (or higher) (FreeAgent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but drive can be reformatted for Mac using Disk Utility) Unit Dimensions - 7.5 (h) x 1.4 (w) (w/o 3 wide base) x 6.3 (d)

Summary: Is a good power button too much to ask for?
Comment: This drive seems to work well in both (ubuntu) Linux and Mac OS X after re-formatting it to FAT32 format. Its lack of a power button makes it very hard to tell whether it's on or off after disconnecting it from the computer. That's because sometimes you hear the fan running after being disconnected (or unmounted) and sometimes you don't hear the fan running after disconnection. The so-called power button is a big joke! I wonder which engineers at Seagate thought it was good enough. It works erratically and it's essentially worthless if connecting the drive to the computer after connecting it to the mains supply causes the computer to automatically detect the drive. It would have been wiser to have a mechanical switch if the intent was to have a switch that actually works. In this age of consciousness on energy conservation I think Seagate should have been more deliberate on how to power down the device and power up the device whether or not it's connected to a computer. The device "flanks the test" in this regard.

Summary: Junk, junk, junk...Beaware!!!
Comment: A year ago I bought one of these. After several months it started to give me this message (can't access because of hardware failure )!!!!
I have no idea how to solve this and I have already more than 400gb of important stuff on it. Thanks for Seagate production. This is my worst nightmare.

Summary: Mac Friendly
Comment: So, i just purchased this item and i must admit that at first i had no idea what i was doing. I have researched all the different brands and settled with this FreeAgent Pro 500 [FireWire 400, USB 2.0, & eSATA] for my MacBook OS X 10.5 and realized that i didnt need to worry with the installation parts that it askes you to do. i just ran Time Machine and it's working like a charm.

Best part about it, the price for the amount of gigs. Frys Electronics has a sale going on until September 11th, 2008 for the FreeAgent Pro 500 [FireWire 400, USB 2.0, & eSATA] for 89.99. Originally 149.99. can't be that. ^-^

Summary: Reliable, easy to back-up key files
Comment: Great, spacious back-up drive from a trusted name in data storage.

Pros: Intuitive software and handy options: for example, you can turn off the "running lights" on the unit, hide or allow confirmation alerts (that pop up fairly unobtrusively in the lower right hand of your screen when you have them "on") and start/pause/stop the auto back-up (after you set it up). You can also run a routine to delete files you later decide to trash. You can view backed-up items from the system (a la a ghost drive). Transfers are quick. You can also verify all went well with another software routine.

Con: When the back-up software is running, a re-start can trigger a consistency check on your main drive. Tip: Pause the auto-back up before you re-start.
