Customer Rating: Summary: A note about other reviews Comment: Just a note about all the reviews of this item. The price has varied all over the place, from less than $0.50 per disc to almost $3. The weighting of price/quality thus varies a lot. I'm writing this when the price is very high (list price plus $12!) I bought when it was low ($27). I'm happy. What will you be at your price?
Customer Rating: Summary: Complete Beethoven Box Set Comment: This product is great! Good Price and Great Quality. Got it quickly and it came as I expected.
Customer Rating: Summary: Yes , very good but ... Comment: Yes , this is a very good price collection for everyone but just one thing , why the box is that exaggerated & I don't see any reason to be that BIG .Does the size matter ? It's the double thickness of the 60 cds .Even if it's cut 1/3 of the thickness , I still think it's attractive ! This is only the more enviorementally friendly thinking . The music & recordings are good !
Customer Rating: Summary: Bargain, bargain, bargain. Comment: You will NEVER need to regret for purchasing the entire set at the offered price. I need not go through the ENTIRE set again to illustrate. I would only point out that just to name a few of the performances included, and you will immediately rush to obtain this bargain set: I have never before listened to Yefim Bronfman's Beethoven. Here is his 5 Beethoven piano concertos under the baton of Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Top quality stuff - if Bronfman could get a Grammy Award for Bartok, his Beethoven is all the more worthwhile listening to, being a student of (inter alia) top Beethovenian pianist Rudolf Serkin.
The Beethoven opera Fidelio under the baton of Kurt Masur is seldom mentioned. Here it is - and a very convincing reading. Jeannie Altmeyer and others in leading roles. Altmeyer's Leonora being a real surprise.
The piano sonatas were being performed by various pianists, and the level is slightly uneven, but some top ones still available.
I don't agree that there are NO Beethoven songs. The Songs of British Isle are amongst the rarities available on market.
Top violinist Zukermann hemmed the violin sonatas, and just a set by him would cost you the price of this entire set!
Customer Rating: Summary: Cosmic music Comment: I had to wait a little while to get my copy of this wonderful Beethoven box set, but it was well worth the wait. Originally I was looking for just a complete set of String Quartets, but when I realized that I could have an almost complete set of Beethoven masterpieces for less than the cost of a set of String Quartets alone, I went for this box set. I am still working through the box - however some of the gems I have come across so far include: Christ on the Mount of Olives (worth the price alone!) and the collection of British Island Songs, which I would never have come across I am sure. All of the String Quartets I have listened to so far, along with the Piano Sonatas, sound just great. Beethoven was a truly cosmic composer, who's music has the power of elevating one to a much higher plain. I would like to recomed David Tame's 'The Secret Power of Music', as a wonderfully companion read as you listen to some of the finest music ever composed. Tame's book will direct you to listen in a whole new way. I am looking forward to listening to more of this set over the next few cold weeks. I would encourage you to take the plunge, and invest in this great set of Beethoven masterpieces. As noted by other reviews the box is actually twice the size it needs to be! The discs are in individual paper sleeves which have the track listing on them and their is a companion CD-rom with more detailed liner notes in a pdf format.
