Summary: WASTE of MONEY & TIME
Comment: Good luck with the Drobo!

I read great reviews about it. After using the Drobo for a week, I was sorry that I wasted my $500.

Here is what happened:

1. When I got the Drobo, I downloaded the latest firmware first. Then I formatted my first hard drive. After the first time format, I thought it was ready to use. The Drobo dashboard actually asked me to format my drive again in order to use my Drobo. 2nd time format, it worked. Ok, I can live with it but gave me a shaky feeling about it

2. I start backing up all my computers with the USB2. The transfer over 100GB of data using the USB2 took me at least 6 hours to complete the process (leaving it overnight). I am not a tech guy but I know my Seagate or Western Digital external hard drives using USB2 transfer faster than the Drobo. I had the Drobo for my backup on 2 PC and 2 Mac and all gave me the same result. So I can't blame myself not having the USB2 setting it correct.

3. After I did my backup and wanted to clean up some folders in the Drobo (tried both USB2 and Droboshare to delete), the Drobo would not let me DELETE 80% of them (keep giving me an error message). So I reboot my Drobo and try again. Same result over my one week try!

4. I have the Drobo in my walk-in closest since my home network wirings are all there. But I can hear the fan (like an airplane engine) from my bedroom. Not much a problem if you can hide it somewhere else.

The Drobo's selling point is for tech dummies like me who does not know/want to deal with other NASready storage so there is no configuration needed for the Drobo besides formatting the first hard drive. In my case, I may have a better HOPE getting a NASready. At least there is a chance to get my network drive work properly than the Drobo.

Conclusion, WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME with the Drobo. I should have stayed with a simply solution like Seagate or Western Digital Book as my network drive and back it up with another external hard drive (an USB2 connection that works better and faster than the Drobo USB2).

Summary: It works when it works
Comment: I've begun having system freezes under Windows XP with the Drobo attached. The system works fine when there is no Drobo attached. The problems began under firmware 1.1.2, but did not go away when I rolled-back the firmware. Support is good (but only free for a year). Steven is working with me and they even replaced the Drobo once - but my system still freezes every day or two with the Drobo attached.

Summary: How Much Are Your Memories Worth
Comment: After having my laptop hard drive crash and losing a ton of family photos I was heartbroken. I am not partiularly technical, but I knew that a single drive back up scenario wasn't going to be the answer. Not knowing much about how to build a redundant RAID system, I purchased the Drobo on the recomnendation of a friend. I LOVE IT !! What other redundant storage product can you take out of the box and have configured and up and running in under 30 minutes?

I already had a drive fail. My Drobo emailed me to let me know of the failure. I came home and ejected the bad drive and put in a new one. Drobo keep on going. I didn't have to even read the manual to figure out what to do.

I've read that some people think it is expensive, but that is a relative question. I would have paid well over $1k to get my photos and music back (wasn't an option). I've also read that it is slow, but it's fast enough for everything I've needed it for so far.

If you are looking for a safe, EASY and reliable way to protect your memories and music. I highly recommend Drobo.

Summary: Drobo Rocks
Comment: I'm a photographer and the Drobo is the perfect storage solution for me. I am able to backup all my photos easily and I love how it tells you (via a colored light) when it needs you add another drive to increase the storage capacity. Within 5 minutes of taking it out of the box, it was set up and working great.
My only complaint is I wish they had made it with a firewire connection instead of USB 2.0 which is painfully slow when you first are copying multiple drives to it.

Summary: Drobo firmware update rendered Drobo useless
Comment: I bought a Drobo, here's what happened
- As per the instructions I plugged a drive in to the Drobo, powered it on and connected it to my MacBook Pro
- I was prompted to format the drive, which I did, so far so good
- I copied one small file to the Drobo to check it was functioning, no problems so far
- I installed the dashboard software, and was prompted that dashboard and Drobo firmware updates (1.1.2) were available
- I clicked to download and install the dashboard update, waited a few minutes and received a message saying the update had failed
- I had to force quit the dashboard, the I relaunched it, and this time the update worked
- The dashboard reported that no Drobo was connected, so I unplugged the Drobo and reconnected it, still no connection
- After RTFM I power cycled the Drobo and reconnected, this time it connected, but reported that the disk needed to be initialized (again)
- Initialized the disk, and the Drobo reconnected OK
- I did a check for Drobo firmware updates and V1.1.2 was available, so I clicked to install it
- The firmware update completed, the Drobo rebooted, and then rebooted, and then rebooted......
- RTFM again and discover how to do a factory reset, which works, and I get to initialize the disk again
- The disk initialize completes OK, the Drobo reboots, and reboots, and reboots, and reboots........
- I do another factory reset, and try the Drobo using another hard disk
- The initialize works, and then we go into continuous Drobo reboot mode again

From reading forums, it seems the most common failure mode is a reboot loop, which was apparently fixed several firmware updates ago. Also a common issue was that firmware updates can cause you to have to re-initialize the drives, losing your data in the process. Sorry guys, I'm not trusting my data to a system like this. The Drobo is going back today.
