Editorial Reviews:

None of the modern strawberries can compare in flavor to this Alpine variety. It is sweet and tangy with a wild aroma. It will fruit right through the summer and early autumn and moreover it does not attract the birds so much. On top of this it can be producing strawberries after ten weeks from an early sowing.

Summary: don't follow the planting advice that comes with the seeds
Comment: I followed the directions with these seeds, as i did with the other seeds i got from Hirt's. The other seeds germinated within days. Weeks later, still not a single green spot in my strawberry patch. Frustrated, i searched the internet and discovered that the standard planting suggestions are nearly the opposite of what Hirt's gave me.

Hirt's suggested a well lit, warm, humid environment. Everyone else said that alpine strawberries prefer to germinate in cool, dark environments. So i removed the strawberries from my mini-greenhouse and tucked them in a dark corner. Several days later, at least 5 of the seeds germinated (and lest anyone argue that it was just a time issue, i left some of the pots in the greenhouse as well, just in case, and they're still just dirt).

So, the short version is this: the seeds are good, and do sprout, as long as you don't pay attention to the information that comes in the packet.
