Customer Rating: Summary: WHAT A GREAT GIFT! Comment: I got Omega Chess as a birthday gift for my nephews (10 and 12 years old, 1 day apart) and they just LOVE IT!!! I knew they played chess every now and then with their friends and their dad, so on top of the `fun' gifts I had gotten them, as the responsible aunt that I am, I also wanted to get them a really nice chess set that would keep them interested in more than just computer games. That's how I found Omega Chess. I am not a seasoned player, but the new pieces and larger board at least promised a dramatic increase in the number of combinations and so I gave it a shot! I couldn't be happier with the response it got!
Any intelligent and challenging game that gets kids away from the TV and their computer screens and gets them and their friends all fired up has my vote and five full stars!!! To see them this excited and happy while playing a game that hones their analytical skills and constantly puts their intelligence to work, is a gift in itself! As I said before, I don't feel I have enough knowledge to provide an in depth comparison between traditional chess and Omega Chess, but, to be honest, does it really matter? I say this because I know there are traditionalists out there who look down on any chess variant. And I'm sure some variants are good while others are quite bad, but, from a broader point of view though, I think there's always room for a new game in the world and if this one can breath new life into the world of chess and keep it going a little longer, more power to it!
Get it for yourself if you love chess or give it as a gift to someone who does - either way this quality product (I really liked this set compared to others that I've seen) is worth every penny!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Game! Comment: Love the new pieces. They really add a lot of depth. Everyone I've introduced this game to seems to really like it. The bigger board is great too.
Why 4 stars instead of 5, because I really don't like the names of the two new pieces. They sound like they were created by dungeons and dragons geeks. Whenever I'm trying to explain the differences between Omega chess and regular chess, at some point, someone asks if the game comes with 20 sided dice. No really, every time... That being said, it's a lot of fun, and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking to spice up his chess life.
If the omega chess guys read this, Archer, Cannon (think Xianqi), Chariot, something not wizard, or cleric, or bard, or assassin, and General, Lord, Commander, something not champion, gladiator, paladin...or Trogdor the Burninator.
If you're on the fence, just buy the game, it's fun.
Customer Rating: Summary: Chess as we know it has been dethroned! Comment: My wife gave me this set for Christmas and although I stopped playing Chess a long time ago (mainly because it got too repetitive), I thought I'd give this one a try. To be honest, I don't think any other tactical game has managed to captivate me in such a short period of time as Omega Chess has. I had tried a few other Chess variants in the past but without great success. Either they were diverging too much from mainstream Chess which was a deterrent for me, or the fairy pieces were not well balanced and the play awkward. This game however has it all! The Wizard and The Champion are the two additions to the traditional arsenal (which is kept identical to regular Chess), but they move in their own new ways, somehow complementing eachother perfectly and blending well with the other pieces. Although you can learn this game in less than a minute, the complexity these two new pieces adds is staggering. The game is also very entertaining and evolves fairly rapidly, once you get past the opening moves.
The manufacturer did not spare any expenses in creating the board and the pieces. The rubber mat is sturdy, lays flat in an instant while the pieces feel heavy and dense, unlike some cheaply manufactured plastic ones you can buy in Chess stores. The rule sheet came a bit crumpled but their website has more than enough information on how to play the game. For this price and the enjoyment it brings, it's a steal!
Customer Rating: Summary: Burnt Out on Chess - and Now In Love Again! Comment: I've played casual and tournament chess since high school. After playing at the tournament level for a few years, I got tired of struggling with books of openings and endings, playing computers that could always beat me, or seeing games draw over and over because people had memorized positions. The creativity and energy of chess was ruined for me the more I tried to improve my game - the opposite of how a game should be! I've tried several chess variants, including Fisher's Random Chess. But none kept the beauty and power of chess intact while adding that extra "something" - until I discovered Omega Chess a few years ago. The concept of the game is brilliant, and now they have made good commercial-grade, solid sets that are worth every cent. OC keeps all the insight of chess, but the new pieces and board make all the previous openings and endings obsolete. The players are free to create again. Having played OC, I'll never go back to traditional chess. Omega is strategically and tactically superior, without becoming too difficult or long to play. I predict that in 10 years chess players everywhere will be playing this game right alongside traditional chess. I dare you to try this game! (Check out all the rules, grandmaster endorsements, strategic tips, etc. at their website - good stuff.)
