Customer Rating: Summary: I love this thing Comment: I am really impressed with this GPS. I've used my Dell Axim in the past with Mapopolis. They went out of business so I needed something new. After a friend of mine bought a cheaper Tom Tom, I looked at what was out there, and I wanted the voice commands after I saw it. It is a little quirky at first, but I wouldn't trade it now. I also love the remote control.
The only things that I wish worked better were:
1. The FM transmitter - in a vehicle with the antenna in the front of the car works well, but if it's in the back of the car you can forget it.
2. It doesn't recognize my Motorola i880 (Nextel) It will make calls from the phone, but will not update traffic with it or import the phonebook.
Overall, I love it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Tom Tom 920T Comment: I used my Garmin 2620 since 2005, weekly, as I travel extensively. I have never ugraded the maps. This Tom Tom was a gift, the idea being newer was better. It has good features, it was easier to enter an address, it recovers from route deviations quicker, it doesn't keep shouting "recalculating, recalculating," and the computer doesn't get confused as often. However, I searched for restaurants, and came up with 5 hits. Garmin gives restaurants from here to the next coast. I searched for an historical POI, got nothing. I thought an historical POI, that has been on the map longer than anyone I know has been alive, should have been preloaded as a POI. Garmin came preloaded with all kinds of restaurants, shopping, hospitals, government offices, entertainment, and more. I see Best Buy offers to help you load POI's. Well, Amazon had the better price. I don't have time for all this manual loading. My GPS came on Monday, and Tuesday, I was leaving town.
That suction cup mount is useles. It stuck maybe 3 times for the duration of my journey. It constantly falls off and hits the gear shift before hitting the floor. Being touch sensitive, all the banging on the way to the floor sometimes resets the GPS. Sometimes, it falls so far away, you can't pick it up without pulling over. The Garmin came with a bean bag that sits on the dash.
It was much easier to see my route layout at a glance while on the road with the Garmin.
I lost signal more often with the Tom Tom.
I couldn't use it straight out of the box. The Tom Tom had to connect to my laptop and download info first. I don't know what language it was communicating in, Norwegion, I think. I had to call Tom Tom for help setting up. The Garmin just wanted to know where I wanted to go.
Sadly, someone just broke into my car and stole my Garmin 2620. I am buying a Garmn Nuvi to replace it. This Tom Tom just does not meet my needs.
Go with a Garmin.
Customer Rating: Summary: just love it Comment: we have used this tomtom on several trips already and are quite happy with the unit. It is easy to use and clear in giving directions. We much prefer our tomtom over the gps in our car.
Customer Rating: Summary: Mediocre product, extremely poor service Comment: I've had this unit for less than six months and it's malfunctioned. It's stopped charging in the car, the screen flickers on and off and the speakers make sudden, loud crackling sounds. I contacted the company - the warranty is two years - and they refused to pay for the item to be shipped even though it's defective. Then I found out that they plan on sending me a refurbished unit back. If I had wanted to buy a refurbished unit, I would have bought it six months ago for a significant price difference. I've contacted the VP of Sales to deal with the problem, and they have absolutely ignored me. This company does NOT stand behind its product. I absolutely do not recommend any TomTom product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent product Comment: Very powerful, an excellent choice with good navigation. Only one thing missed : Mexico maps.
I'got previously a Viamichelin (many mistakes and long time to acquire gps) and now Viamichelin has left the gps market (no more support, no new maps). I tried Mio (no comment, forget it, you will never be able to read the screen on sunny days). I finally go to Tomtom in order to get North American and Europe maps. Good product, very short waiting time for gps acquisition, accurate and precise. I've bought the 920. Important things to mention :
- after updating a 920 with v8 maps, you have got a 930 !
- if you buy the T version (with TMC) in US, your antenna won't work in Europe and vice versa. If you want to use TMC on both sides, you need 2 antennas (which are physically identical, so don't mix them or it will be a mess !).
- I travel a lot. I can use it in Singapore, Hong-Kong, Australia etc. but you don't have maps of Mexico and Malaysia (that Garmin has). It's a pity.
- remote control is a gadget except if you have a very big car...
- no home charger, no case provided. It's a pity.
- software is very simple to use. You will never be lost !
- some map mistakes, but very good improvements with map share. These improvements are depending on the size of the community : in Europe, maps are perfect due to the large number of users (TT is #1). In US, maps are perfectible and it will take some time which could be short if their products are well sold. No need to buy an updated map, sounds good !
- bluetooth hands free works very well.
- voice recognition exists but forget it (gadget which doesn't work while driving).
Conclusion : quite perfect, reliable, always working (no bugs)... Only one improvement for future : Mr Tomtom, provide more maps, please !
