This elegant external hard drive, reminiscent of a book, is the perfect storage solution. It takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. Summary: bad data transfer
Comment: i bought this to consolidate several smaller drives i have lying about onto one master backup, and i had serious trouble with the drive. transferring large folders or files would cause it to have "unknown errors" (of course, after nearly an hour of sitting there) every time, so i was reduced to moving things one at a time. then, a large file that couldn't be broken up jammed the thing and i gave up.
thinking that somehow it could be my computer, i brought the drive in to my office, but experienced the same issues there. for the record, the same files were easily transferred to and from 2 other drives i had--simply not this one.
it's lovely to look at, and small, but unfortunately ill-designed for what i would imagine to be it's primary purpose--moving large amounts of data for backup!

Summary: 1 TB My Book Major Problems
Comment: I've owned multiple 500gb My Book external drives with no problem.
The 1 TB external drive has given me problems since the beginning.
It literally shuts itself off during use multiple times per day. I don't mean after long periods of non-use. I mean right in the middle of opening and/or saving files. I've contacted Western Digital over the issue they sent me patch which did nothing. I highly regret this purchase. I would suggest staying with the 500gb drives.

Comment: This hard drive is quiet, small, nice looking, a great price for 1 TB, and so far (just approaching three weeks now) is working flawlessly. But if you are using this hard drive with an Apple Macintosh computer, and you want this hard drive to be able to take advantage of the significant advantages offered by the Mac, before you put this drive to use, make sure that you re-format it (it takes less than a minute) as described by at least one other amazon.com reviewer on these pages. The way you re-format this for the Mac while extremely easy, is not obvious or in just the usual way, and you probably need to look up that advice in these reviews before you waste your time with the more typical Mac formatting processes, which does not work. It's a shame that the instructions don't make clear that 1) This hard drive will work with a Mac with the formatting that comes with the hard drive, but that 2) It is easy and to your advantage to first re-format the drive if you plan to use it with your Mac. Needless to say, the seller or manufacturer should also add the simple but atypical re-formatting instructions for the Mac, as I've heard that without knowing exactly how to reformat this hard drive for the Mac, some purchasers have been frustrated trying to re-format it for the Mac in the conventional way, and therefore have unnecessarily returned the drive to the seller as either not being "friendly" with their Mac or as not being Mac formatable (if there is such a word) and therefore not compatible with their Mac.

Comment: I picked up this product to make a video/film. It has worked well so far. It is also a good way to back up your machine if you have information that you can't afford to lose.
