Customer Rating: Summary: Based upon prior experience... Comment: First, Maxtor should no longer even be in business. Look at their past 1TB drives as an example. This drive might be great for the first few months. The issue is that if you have it for more than 11 months, you will no doubt have a failure. Maxtor will tell you that you can send it in for a replacement, but if you want your data from your current purchase, they want you to fork over over $2,000 OR MORE. They will tell you that you should have backed up your date... not even considering for a serious moment that this WAS your backup. Their tech support was largely non-existent. They just wanted to recover my data. I'm thinking this is where a bulk of their money comes from.
I would possibly (only possibly) consider a Seagate, but a Maxtor? Never again. Not for this expensive of a purchase. My recommendation is to not just check reviews for this item, check reviews for ALL Maxtor products. This one is new enough that you haven't seen the number of failures it will probably have.
Customer Rating: Summary: Cannot encrypt complete drive snapshots Comment: I WAS going to buy this product in order to do complete system snapshots of my desktop and notebook, but when I read through the user guide at the Maxtor website, I discovered that these snapshots cannot be encrypted. So this won't work for me.
Seems a bit sneaky to advertise that it can do complete system snapshots and that it has encryption technology, but not readily disclose that you can't do them both at the same time.
Customer Rating: Summary: Froze up on first back up on Mac Comment: I have a macbook pro, bought this thing to backup the drive. I installed the software, restarted the computer as it instructed and started a backup of my home directory only. After a few minutes of calculating the backup size, the drive started backing up and then hung. Still haven't done my first backup, the software and the drive just hang, good job maxtor.
Customer Rating: Summary: Horrid, awful little thing. Don't buy (especially if you work with video). Comment: I'm a professional video editor, and I needed a drive quickly and cheaply for an emergency storage issue, so I bought one of these. I had occasional problems getting the drive to mount over the 21 days that it functioned. I run a Mac G5 and a Mac Powerbook, which may possibly be an issue (although it's advertised as Mac compatible).
But then it died. Not even disk warrior would fix the issue. It was toast. I sent it back and (lucky me) I got a brand new one. This one has been "working" for about two months so far, but the thing won't mount unless I boot up the computer, then plug in the power to the drive, then plug in the firewire to the drive, and then only about 70% of the time. If I try to access the drive with finder once it has mounted, it will crash finder un-recovereably about 20% of the time. If I want to use it with Avid (don't get me started), I have to load Avid before doing any of this, or it takes down my machine. And then, once in Avid, I find that about 1 in 4 times I access the drive to save, Avid crashes and won't relaunch, and the machine generally goes down too. I have none of these problems with any other drives I've used (EXCEPT the MyBook drives, which have similar issues, are also complete trash, and should be avoided).
Spend the extra money on a decent drive while you have a chance to avoid the headaches and potential loss of valuable data and hard work.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good basic drive Comment: Good drive, would like different shape for more flexible positioning, and could use some more robust backup software.
