Customer Rating: Summary: great adapter Comment: works as advertised, connects to my apple airport with no trouble at all. setup software is quick and easy to use.
Customer Rating: Summary: Works great if you don't use the included software Comment: This is a review based upon using this wireless card with a laptop running Windows XP and a Netgear dual band Wireless-N router with 8 internal antennas.
Bottom line up front: this card works great if you do not use the software that came with the device
At first, my experience with this card was very similar to the other reviews. The connection was extremely slow and I could not get it to switch from wireless-A to wireless-N. I could only use A on the 5.0 GHz frequency or G on the 2.4 GHz frequency. I tried restarting my computer, trying with and without my firewall and security software, restarted my router, et cetera, and the connection remained poor. However, once I turned off the wireless network monitor (the green icon that appears in the lower right after you install the driver) and simply connected through the Windows "choose a wireless connection" screen, my connection was very fast, reliable, and otherwise just like being connected with an Ethernet cable. Since then, I have had no problems and I no longer use the wireless network monitor that came on the installation CD. I am not recommending that you disregard the installation instructions, but I do recommend not using the wireless network monitor afterward. Just connect via Windows and the connection is great.
As I type this, there are two walls between my router and the wireless adapter and I still have signal strength of 4 bars (out of 5) and speed of 162 Mbps. Nearer to the router, I routinely get 5 bars and 297 Mbps.
Before trying this card, I used a USB 2.0 dual band wireless-N adapter and was very disappointed (and returned it after one day). The connection was fast but unreliable with the USB adapter (it would just disconnect for no apparent reason, even when I was only 6 feet from the router). This Linksys notebook card is a significant improvement and my USB port is now available once again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not impressed, would not recommend Comment: I have been running the WPC600N for a week, and it works okay, but does not remember my security key. Every time I log in, I have to retype the key which is very annoying.
My average connection speed is between 5.5 Mbps and 65 Mbps with little rhyme or reason as to why it is faster or slower.
I would not recommend this product until they clean up the software that comes with it, and even then, I am not impressed with the performance.
Customer Rating: Summary: WOW! Comment: Wow! I went from a top of 54 MPS to 270 MPS! That is along with the Linksys WRT600 N wireless router. Internet speed test was about 4000 KBS before I used this adapter, now I am hitting 11849 KPS. I love it!
Customer Rating: Summary: Another great product by linksys Comment: This unit is working absolutely great. Just like cpyao said make sure to insert it first before adding drivers then once the windows prompts you for driver location select the rom drive where the CD is located. Doing this allows you to not install the crappy software from linksys. Use windows to configure the wireless. And remember to use WPA2 AES settings allowing you to reach the 270mb/s. If you have XP you must download the kb update for this!!!! KB893357. If you have Vista it is already installed. Use the 5 ghz band. Doing this you will have to connect to the wireless id of the 5 ghz band not the 2.4. so make sure you give different ids for both the 5 and 2.4 ghz bands.
then you will be good to go. Dont expect to get 270mbs after 30 feet from base. i get about 120 - 220 at 75 feet away.
