Summary: Excellent Printer for Home / Home Office Use - Mac OS/X User
Comment: First, I would have to say this is the best little monochrome on the market and worth its weight in gold. I purchased the printer new, off of Amazon, and from boxed, installation and final test page it took about 20 minutes on two different Mac OS/X 10.5 systems to get set up.

Second, I configured the printer using a wireless connection and had no difficulties at all. I really didn't consult with the setup documentation -- if you know a little about wireless networking you shouldn't have any trouble. I'm in a remote location and have WEP/WPA turned off -- so I didn't have to get into those issues.

Third, I had an Epson all in wonder. With individual ink cartridges, I always just selected print in black and white only. I recently bought a new cartridge and the chipset changed, and couldn't print in just black -- it began telling me to replace my color cartridges. I knew it was time to quit diddling around with inkjets just for printing in black.

In conclusion, I have always told people that I only need black and white printing for envelopes and documents. If I need a photo, I'll send it to a pro lab and have an 8x10 done for under $4 -- a real photo. The only features that I would like to see in the next model is the capability to add more memory and maybe a small tray for loading multiple envelopes.

Hands down, this is an overall winner for home and home/office use.

Last note : As a computer consultant, the worse printers that I have came across are the Xerox color Phasers (constant jams, burned out drums etc) -- Just saving you some grief if your possibly considering a color laser.

Summary: great price for what you get, not the easiest to configure for wireless
Comment: If you aren't familiar with a little bit of networking and wireless configuration, you'll want to have someone around that is. Otherwise, its a fine laser printer with wireless connectivity, and great value for the price.

Summary: Wow, such a great priced machine
Comment: THIS IS a nice printer. I was looking around to buy a decent one long time ago but never got into that. HAD to after my 1 year old Epson Inkjet asked me again for new cartridge. In one year I possibly printed like 50 pages and I was surprised so I was ready to dump Epson far far away. Well one night I decided to look for laser printer B/W because that is what we use in our office and I came across this one. Because it is very compact I read in depth description and some reviews here and there. But the most helpful ones I found here. So after hunting for price on the same night, next day I went to local BestBuy and picked up the best deal that could be found, no mail-in rebated, no shipping and LOW LOW cost. I was afraid to set it up after reading so many reviews negatively pointing out one thing - setting up the wireless connection. I also have the Linksys 54g and I was really concerned how many hours will I spent suffering with the device.
I unpack the box and first thing I take is the manual, I read every required piece of information and follow every step they recommend. I connect the device, insert the CD, connect the network cable, etc. I was waiting for that big boom when my brain would explode from not understanding anything. BUT it did NOT. Everything went so well that I was finished setting up my main PC and my laptop after 1 hour - It felt great!
So the lesson is again - READ THE MANUAL - and follow the recommended steps and you will fall in no trouble at all. Except you have to know your router settings (I did set that up a few years ago and that was painful). So somehow I found my old notes and was able to access the router settings and I believe that saved me at least half of the night, as I read in the reviews people were in so much trouble because they did not have that info just pressed next next and hoped that it finishes.
Overall - great product, nothing fancy just basic printing needs with a little twist that it is wireless. I LOVE this printer

I just bought this printer after my Epson inkjet asked me for another cartridge AGAIN after like 10 pages in 6 months. I bet it dries up the nozzle and it thinks that it is out, I do not use the printer much so I was looking for low cost solution and here we go - I think I got a real winner! In addition now I can print from both of my computers which is VERY nice. So after reading some of the reviews yesterday I thought - WoW this is going to be a tough night setting up this printer to work wirelesly, but I was ready for a battle and decided to pick up the printer next day from BestBuy - they had a great deal on this and no mail-in rebates. So I come home and I'm aware that everynoe said afterall READ THE MANUAL. So I read and followed every step they RECOMENDED me to do. And it was a breeze, I was done setting up printer, main PC and laptop in like an hour, I felt so good that I did not mess anything up and everything did go without a hitch. So I am very pleased with the product and the manual and the CD - can not complain about anything. I used the network cable to set it up, and unpluged it after setup as instructed - so the machine is completely wireless except power of course. My suggestion to everyone setting up this printer as wireless printer - use the network cable and KNOW your router settings - VERY IMPORTANT to know the settings because without them - I have read how many people suffered...spent hours and hours undoing the bad they did...and suffering again...hope this helps at least one person :)

Summary: Good wireless network printing at good price
Comment: This is a good monochrome network laser printer at a good price. The frustration with this printer is in the set up phase. Setting it up was really long and frustrating, but once you know the secret, you'll have no problems. It is so simple, yet so complicated ... .

Another reviewer pointed out -- and I agree -- that as a general rule, it is initially easier to set up a network device using a cable connection. Unfortunately, I was unable to do this at first. I connected directly to the router, but the router didn't see the printer, and the network activity lights on the ethernet port didn't show any activity. This was frustrating. I spent hours and hours attempting different set ups: wired, wireless, all the ways in the manual. Among these was an attempt at "Easy Set-Up" on my Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, which also failed. (Interestingly, the router's Cisco logo, which used to be illuminated, is now no longer illuminated since attempting the Easy Set Up. Why? I have no idea ...). I re-read both the manual and all the different internet posts on this set-up numerous times. The secret is contained in a third reviewer's post.

This worked for me:
1. If you have already attempted an install, UNinstall the drivers. Do this FIRST.
2. Turn off the power to your Brother 2170w.
3. Turn off your Windows Firewall in your security settings (Start>Control Panel>Security Center).
4. Re-set the printer's internal print server!!
- a. Holding down the blue GO button with the power OFF, turn the power on.
- b. Make sure all the LED's illuminate (toner/drum/error)
- c. Release the GO button, then press it seven times in succession
-- i. The manual says that the LEDs should illuminate again, demonstrating the reset was successful
-- ii. My LED's did NOT illuminate again, but the reset was successful anyway
5. Connect the cable between your router and the printer's ethernet port
6. Run the CD
7. Select Wireless Network Setup
8. Select Wireless Setup and Driver Install
- a. initial computer only
- b. for all subsequent computers select Driver Install Only
9. Select Step By Step
10. Select With Cable
11. Make sure that your router detects the printer by illuminating the LED for the selected port when cable connected
12. Look at the ethernet port on the printer and ensure the LED's are illuminated when cable connected
- a. If none of the LEDs are illuminated, go back to resetting the internal print server again (step 4 above)
13. Click Next once your cable is connected until the software detects the Available Wireless Device
14. Follow the rest of the steps from page 23 of the manual (step 10)

When all is done, turn your Windows Firewall back on ...

The printer will work like a charm.

Summary: Couldn't Get to Work
Comment: I was really hoping this would simplify things here on the home network.

Bottom line: on wired hookup, can see the printer at a given IP, both from the router and the computer. However, the icon for the printer in the system try constantly reports "offline". This is a problem seen on many forums, with no real resolution.

Wireless: faggedabout it. Over WPA, AES, no workie.

I'm sorry I spent 2 hours on a Sunday trying to get this to work, and, that Brother's tech support, apparently, is not available on a weekend, to help troubleshoot.

If the printer is unreliable, i.e., it goes "offline" for no apparent reason, and tech support is unavailable, would I trust this for my important documents, that might be due on Monday?

No way, and no thanks.

I really wish it would have worked as promised, but, I'll be returning this product.
