Customer Rating: Summary: Great little drive! Some design issues. Comment: Just purchased this yesterday, so I cannot comment on reliability yet. I do have some thoughts on the design:
- The glossy black finish looks great next to the latest generation MacBook and MacBook Pro (the ones with the aluminum unibody). However, it is a fingerprint magnet, so I consider it a poor choice of material for something that is intended to be handled frequently.
- The built-in, retractable USB cord is a great idea, but it is super short. This is fine for a laptop sitting on a table and for a Mac mini, but pretty much useless for connecting to anything else (e.g. iMac, Mac Pro). Luckily, it comes with a USB extension cable, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having the retractable one.
- The end cap is a nice touch and will keep cruft from getting in the FireWire ports, but I will probably lose it in a few months. :-)
I'm mainly using it as an emergency boot drive for troubleshooting systems that won't boot. Works great so far with the unibody MacBook. The MacBook USB port supplies enough power so that I don't need to connect it to a second USB port for power.
Note that some older Macs may not supply enough power to the drive. When I connected it to a PowerPC-based Mac mini via USB, the drive emitted a beep and did not mount. I assume this meant that it did not have enough power. Connecting via Firewire worked fine.
Also, the drive runs fairly hot. Hope this does not reflect poorly on reliability.
Customer Rating: Summary: Little Big little Comment: I haven't used this a great deal, but it's small, quiet and powerful. It's little in size, big in storage, and little in noise and hassle so far.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beautiful and high performing Comment: This drive works perfectly with both the USB and the Firewire interface. I've taken it on many business trips to back up my notebook files, and it's always been ready and fast. The normal bumps and jostling it gets in my carry-on luggage never affects it at all. Its appearance is fine too--a nice stackable shiny black box. I've used it on my Windows XP machine and on my son's MacBook. Plug and play in both cases. Highly recommended!
Customer Rating: Summary: VERY nice Comment: I love this drive. It spins up much faster than my wall-powered WD external, is VERY light-weight, and the ports are great.
It is brilliant to have the USB cable built into the drive. VERY convenient, as I don't have to carry that around too.
On that note, the thing powers fine from my macbook with just the retractable USB cable, so no power issues there. Obviously does fine with Firewire too.
The firewire is great, and it is nice to have the ability to daisy-chain, although I have no use for that yet.
The included software is no big deal, especially for mac. This was not meant to be a backup disk for me, so the backup software is irrelevant. The programmable button is kind of a gimmick. I would like to program a set of actions to it, which I might (quit iTunes, eject disk) but overall it is not that cool for my uses...
The two gripes I have that keep it from a 5:
> the material is pretty prone to fingerprints (and likely scratches, although I haven't abused it (yet)
>While the cap is a nice feature, it should really be stowable somewhere, like being able to be put on the top end when you are using the ports. Currently, the cap sort of runs around in the carrying pouch or loose on the desk, which just invites it to get lost. I suppose this is just a bit of form over function. Which, on that note, the thing is tiny, sexy, and light, which is nice, but I don't care that much, honestly...
Customer Rating: Summary: Love this portable drive Comment: It's small, light and holds a whole lot of stuff. The case protects it when I'm storing in my laptop bag.
