Comment: For us poor, sad pathetic AGP video card users - this is a dang nice card. I believe there is a PCI-e version of this card and I hear it's amazing. This is not that card.
The reason you're looking at buying this card is because you own an out-of-date pc and instead of spending the money to upgrade your computer to something decent, you'd rather spend your money to upgrade your video card. Like everything, there are pros and cons.
My machine (my borrowed friends machine): 2.8 p4, 1gbram, 750 power watt (new). I think the main thing you need to be asking yourself is, do I have the power to run this card? I encountered a crap load of trouble while installing this card and trying to get it to work. I have a Dell Dimension 4500 which sports a crappy 350 watt power supply. Hardly enough to get the card AND the computer running. Yes, this card requires a separate power cord to be plugged into it - similar to a floppy power cord. In the end I had to go buy myself a 90 dollar 750 watt power supply just to get it working - so think about that in the whole cost effective big picture. If you don't have a large enough power supply, add at least 70 bucks.
Once it was installed and working, it was a immediate obvious upgrade. Before I had a 64mb Geforce something or nother that barely played Half Life 2 - much less games like FEAR and don't even think about Oblivion. Once the card was in though, things changed. Half Life 2 played like a dream, you know, how the creators meant it to be played. FEAR played impressively, with some lagging in ultra contact scenes (explosions and the such). Oblivion played. I was impressed by that alone. Before it wouldn't even show textures or shadings, it was just a white mess that was hardly playable. The card not only made it playable on my pathetic excuse for a computer, but made it rather...well...good. I think Oblivion was the most impressive as it is quite smooth and rather enjoyable. At about half the settings, fight scenes are jittery and a little annoying. However, if I turned the settings to low, they played rather well.
Other games I've been playing. Halo plays excellent. Myst V plays decently, still some lagging but not enough to get pissed at. Doom 3 is pretty good. Wasn't able to play extreme settings, but at high without lagging. Far Cry plays brilliantly with no lagging whatsoever on nearly the highest settings. I was especially happy about that.
Going from hardly being able to play Half Life 2 and Morrowind to being able to play FEAR, Oblivion and Far Cry is a HUGE advancement in my book and was well worth the money I spent for the card (around 140). Sometimes I wonder if the alternative Geforce 8800 would have worked better, but I couldn't find a decently priced AGP version. I will say that I recommend the card to folks out there who don't have PCI-e slots and have to use AGP. It's an excellent card, it improved my graphics ten-fold and it's nice to finally be able to play higher end games. My next test is Bioshock and Crysis. I don't think Crysis will play very well as it recommends a dual core processor. Bioshock I think will play with good results.
I wasn't sure if I should mentions this or not as I don't think it relates to the card, but I have had some problems with BSOD's. If my computer has been running hot and I exit out of Far Cry or Oblivion it'll go to BSOD. Obviously this is due to the high-end (relatively) card in a not so high-end computer. I haven't looked into it as it doesn't necessarily bother me, but I do want to point out that it's not the card but my system. Also, it only happens when the pc is running hot. If I boot cold and play for an hour and exit, it's fine. Also, I haven't optimized the cooling capacity of the case and it isn't very efficient. There are steps you can take to optimize efficiency on a case and if you think you need it, try looking that sort of stuff up as it really does help.
I haven't overclocked this card either because my computer does run hot often and I fear it burning up - however I have read some testimony's on overclocking and from it sounds, it does a pretty good job. Don't be safe like me! Overclock!
In the end, if you're a sad AGP user like myself - this is probably the card you're looking for to update your graphics system. The only thing I regret is the fact that it's AGP and when the time comes to upgrade...I won't be able to use this card. I guess I'll just have to sell it to the few remaining AGP users out there at that point.
Don't forget! Check your power supply! You will need a 6-pin power cord to plug into the card and if your power supply doesn't have that (or isn't 450 watts or more), you will need to find yourself an adapter! I actually bought an adapter to use and a 500 watt power supply that didn't have that cord built into it and became extremely frustrated when I found out that it didn't work. Well, as it turns out (after a very frustrating visit to Best Buy's geek squad), the adapter was faulty. I didn't buy the adapter from Best Buy, but from a local joint that I absolutely hate. Well, returned the adapter and ended up just buying a nice power supply with that specific 6-pin power cord in it. Most new power supplies come with it, so it shouldn't be a problem if you have a new one. Otherwise...check!
