Summary: Poor Video Quality
Comment: I wish this was a better unit; but the test of a DVD recorder is image quality, and this one is quite poor.

I recorded a ton of the 2008 Olympics on this Toshiba. I was greatly disappointed looking at the DVDs. I recorded from HD transmissions via my HD tuner output; something I've done before with other recorders, and I had much better results.

This is my 3rd DVD recorder in the last 5 years, and this one is the worst. It is worth a fee to get rid of this. I'm not plugging other brands; just a warning this model is cheap in all ways. Just maybe other Toshiba's aren't so bad; but I won't gamble that again.

The unit's best quality mode, "XP", records only 1 hour per disc. This mode looks pretty good, with only occasional image problems. However, there should not be ANY artifacts on a 1 hour mode disc, based on comparing other older DVD recorder's "best mode".

The 2 hour mode, "SP", is just awful. It looks like other recorders 4 or 6 hour mode. I see big, fat blocks, digital "sparkle" and cracking in the image, and other constantly annoying visual artifacts. Again my older recorders don't have this poor video quality in 2 hour mode.

If you aren't fussy about image quality and have a small TV you may not care, but future large/HD TVs will show these recordings as 3rd rate.
*** I would not recommend this to anyone.

Summary: Love this Recorder!
Comment: I had purchased two different DVD Recorders from Radio Shack. One lasted a little less than a year. The other lasted approximately six months. Both had intermittent problems for a few months before refusing to record any longer. I shopped around town and on the internet for many months before I found the Toshiba DR410 Recorder. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to read the reviews and decided it was what I had been looking for. I purchased mine for an amazing price! This Recorder is top notch in my book. It is a quality unit. It's sleek and good looking. It is very user friendly and versatile compared to my two other machines. It records beautifully! You really can't tell the difference in the picture quality between the 2 hour and the 8 hour settings. I am really happy with this Recorder! Can't you tell? Two thumbs up for Toshiba and Amazon!!

Summary: Wonderful, except ...
Comment: This is easy to hook up, easy to navigate as the other reviewers will say and no need for me to repeat. However, for my use it is missing one essential, to my thinking, feature. That is, you cannot watch one program while recording another. I guess I am spoiled with the old DVR that finally gave up on me.

Summary: Decent for the price
Comment: I just received this unit and am learning how to use it.
So far, it appears to work decently. However, I am spoiled by another machine I have - a Panasonic which allows use of DVD-RAM discs. This Toshiba model doesn't allow RAM discs. It does, however, allow marking chapters and then "hiding" those chapters - effectively allowing editing of unwanted bits (commercials) from recorded programs, etc. That is a plus, although apparently only while using +RW or -RW discs.
Still, a decent machine for the decent price.

Summary: Great!
Comment: Finally decided to upgrade from VCR recording to DVD and I couldn't be happier. An added plus, it has inputs on the front so I can record my old home videos on Video8 tapes on DVD. Fantastic.
