Summary: Better than I could have imagined
Comment: I've used commercial tampons, natural tampons, pads, and disposable menstrual cups before and this absolutely is the best, easiest, and most effective. Without a doubt.
It is much easier to insert and remove than I thought, because that was a concern of mine at first. You feel it in you even less than tampons. Change it once every twelve hours + it's virtually impossible to fill the cup up enough to warrant changing more often = it's almost difficult to remember that you're even on your period! I am not kidding at all! It's small, discreet, easy to use, easy to clean, comfortable, eco-friendly.. I can't say enough good stuff about this. It even feels much less invasive than tampons. I have yet to have it shift a single inch or leak a single drop.
The gross part of me really wants to start gifting these to my friends!!

Summary: Not as great as I expected.
Comment: I got the smallest DivaCup available, but still found it to be incredibly uncomfortable. Once it was in, there wasn't too much discomfort after the first few minutes, but inserting it was a trial and removing it again was actually painful.
I was really disappointed, since I'd hoped it would work out and had been pretty excited about getting it after all of the great reviews my friends had given me. I think the problem is that women's bodies don't come in only two sizes ("pre-childbirth" and "post-childbirth"), and so for some it might be fantastic, but for others it's simply never going to fit comfortably.
I'll be giving it another try my next period, as I really do believe in the product and think that it's a great concept. But I'd caution other potential buyers--particularly younger women who've never had kids--to be prepared for an ordeal of getting used to it.

Summary: It's awkward to write, but here is the answers to your questions.
Comment: I have always been a heavy bleeder. As a heavy bleeder you have to consider your options carefully...
Pad --> Yeah right, a change every hour at least.
Tampon --> Changing every two hours or so and with old pipes I cannot flush the things without clogging the drains. If you need tampons let me know... I have hundreds that I will never use.
Instead --> Yes, that is what they are called, go ahead and look them up. They are a throw away version of a cup. I can even get up to 6 hours with these things. When you go to remove them they splatter *cough* blood all over your hands AND the firm plastic rim presses against your colon so it can get uncomfortable at times, but it is what I have been using for the last year.
The diva cup --> The price is what kept me from trying it the most. After considering how much the other "supplies" cost over an extended period of time I thought it would be worth a go. Once you get the insertion procedure figured out you can forget that you're on your period... forget it... don't worry whether or not you are carrying what you need in your purse, how you'll dispose of it if you're at someone's house, or having to ask someone if you realize you've forgotten to bring what you need. It can be wiped out and reinserted. Forget eco-friendly... go purse-less and relax.

Comment: The Diva Cup is so amazing. As a college student it is going to save me a lot of money and time 'cause I will no longer have to buy pads! I no longer dread my period. Now if only there was a way to never have to experience cramps...
