The landmark musical's first-ever Broadway revival! The curtain rang down on Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific in 1954 after five years of extraordinary acclaim and countless awards including nine Tonys and a Pulitzer. Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize winning book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical is set on a tropical island during World War II and tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples - U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Marine Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat - and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score's songs include such musical theater classics as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "A Wonderful Guy."

Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointed with quality of recording Comment: It is one of the greatest scores ever written. The leads are all competent and blessed with fantastic voices - Paulo Szot, Kelly O'Hara and Matthew Morrison. But the recording is not consistent. Some areas are too loud and some too soft (without adjusting the volume dial). There was not enough passion to sweep the listener to these great songs. Even the "It Nearly Was Mine" number of Paulo Szot failed to send chills the way Brian Stokes Mitchell did in the concert recording. If not for this, it would have been perfect. But still worth having.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Comment: I'm in love with a wonderful performance. I actually saw the original, with Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin, and this revival is every bit as good!
Customer Rating: Summary: Five Plus Comment: This is a milestone recording and the production is one of the very best of any Musical done. Both of the principals are wonderful and compete with the exception orginal cast. How fantastic we have this!
Customer Rating: Summary: south pacific Comment: absolutely amazing recording. kelli o'hara is a remarkable talent. when she sings, shivers go down your back. can't believe this is paulo szot's first recording. what a talent!! a must buy
Customer Rating: Summary: digitally cold Comment: It sounds as though it was recorded on Mars and then piped in. I believe the performances are fine but the recording is so compressed, so clean it sounds bloodless and a bit lifeless. Too bad. Stick with the Carnegie Hall recording with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Reba Mcintyre(?) or the original with Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. Thanks
