Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New Orleans piano tradition.

Customer Rating: Summary: Have to have it Comment: Don't have a lot to add to what others have said, just that I didn't mean to buy this but I listened to a few seconds of the first 5 cuts in a record store and it came home with me. And, I'm glad it did. Interesting comparing this work with Tom Waits, similarities jump out at you but Randy is really a different guy and he's even simpler and wickeder at some points...
I love the arrangements/orchestration on some of these, the heart attack riffs in the opening track, the Kurt Weill slam in Piece of the Pie.
Ok so lots of lyrics are not politically correct but you have to give Randy the slack because, well, he's going to take it anyway...
Customer Rating: Summary: extremely disappointed Comment: Randy Newman's work as a whole is superb. But this latest offering is, i'm sorry to say, simply not good enough. The lyrics are poor and the melodies are virtually non-existent. He doesn't need the money i'm assuming, so why couldn't he have waited till he had produced something worthy of his standing, or, if his creative juices have dried up, stick to film scores. Sorry to be so harsh and dismissive, but this is the first bad record he has ever made.
Customer Rating: Summary: WHAT'S OLD IS NEW AGAIN...NOT. Comment: I'm a Randy Newman junkie. Can't get enough. I love his wit, I love his pain, I love his soundtracks and I even loved these songs. . . the first time. Every one of them sounds like something he's done before. From such an original and unique artist this was a complete disappointment.
That said, I still love ya Randy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Randy's last Studio CD? Comment: Harps and angels is another great randy newman CD, and no, I'm not one of randy's relatives. It took him 9 years to come up with 8 new songs, and reworked 2 more to make a complete album. That tells me this will probably be his last studio album. The 2 older tunes are 'laugh and be happy' which I love, and 'feels like home' originally on the faust CD. At first I didn't think feels like home fit into this collection, but it's still a nice song, though I like the faust version better. Another Gem is 'piece of the pie' A song that would have fit in nicely on the born again CD. Randy is a very funny cat, and alway's brings a smile to my face. Harp's and angels isn't randy's best, that belongs to good ol boys, sail away, little crimminals, 'bad love' is also one of his all time best, but this new one is pretty close to the top.
Customer Rating: Summary: good reviews must be coming from Randy Newmans relatives! Comment: I liked Randy Newman's earlier work. This album is terrible. He must have spent a whole week putting it together. That includes the time to write the songs. It's really a shame. I had high hopes for this album.
