This Eee PC by Asus comes in Pearl White style that is created with cutting-edge Infusion casing technology. The Infusion surface provides a new level of resilience; scratch resistance and beautiful style while you're out and about. The Eee PC has a sturdy display with a high-resolution screen. At 1024 x 600 pixels, images are clear and sharp, making it more comfortable on the eyes reading and editing documents. On the top of this screen is the 1.3 Megapixel Webcamera that works synchronously with the 802.11n wireless to provide web conferencing anywhere, anytime for easier web communications and increased work efficiency. 20GB of storage allows you to easily manage photos, music and data files more efficiently. The quiet 20GB solid-state drive consumes less power, allows the device to boot quickly, produces less heat and is less susceptible to shock damage. The exclusive Super Hyper Engine, technology found only in the Eee PC, is incredibly efficient and saves up to 15% of power. Combined with SSD, which consumes less power, allows between 4 to 8 hours of battery life. The GNU Linux version is perfect for users who desire an icon-driven and an easy point-and-click interface. Well suited for users without any computer experience. With over 50 built-in applications, it offers dynamic computing that allows anyone to learn, work and play. Customer Rating: Summary: Great laptop Comment: awesome laptop, great hardware, super small and portable. if you dont like the OS, wipe it and install ubuntu.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Net-Book Comment: Bottom Line Up Front:
Unless you use a computer for light tasks (net-surfing, email, school work, connecting to other computers, etc.), the 901 is NOT meant to be your only PC.
Leave your more intensive tasks (file sharing, heavy gaming, computer-aided drafting, remapping the human genome, etc.) with your main computer. If going back and forth between the two machines is a problem, learn how to make your 901 connect remotely to your main machine. That's one of it's strengths. Use it.
The 901 is a NETBOOK:
It's highly mobile, and highly-connected enough to be either a "smart terminal" for work, or a basic "media station" for personal use. Although it might have the processing power for more intensive tasks, it lacks the massive storage capacity. (You can use an external, USB Hard-Drive to overcome that).
Why I Purchased One:
Starting a month or two back, I actually had to be mobile at a moment's notice. That's when I realized my 3 year-old, 5-pound "luggable" laptop (I believe it's actually called a "Desktop Replacement") was too cumbersome to be of use to me. So I purchased the 901, and all is well again.
The luggable keeps the heavy processor- and/or storage-intensive tasks. The 901 takes on my software development and network-admin duties.
Your Concerns May Vary:
If you're truly concerned, try one of these things before buying. I bought mine sight unseen. I was worried about the size of the keyboard. I even tried to "prepare" for it by typing on one of those folding keyboards for PDAs. It was 11.5 inches x 3.5 inches. The 901's keyboard (8.5 inches x 3.25 inches) was much smaller in comparison. I almost sent the computer back before trying it. I'm glad I didn't. I was proficient inside of 10 minutes. Yes, the right-shift key is in the wrong place. You can go to eeeuser.com for a remedy.
Or to be completely fair, look into the competition. A friend of mine--also a computer professional--saw my netbook and liked the concept. However, he didn't like the keyboard. He purchased the Mini 910 from Dell. (It has nearly the same specs, and it's cheaper.) Meanwhile, my boss is looking at the Eee PC 1000, which has a 10-inch screen and a larger, laptop-sized keyboard.
On A Lighter Note(book):
If you're a guy, you might take exception with the pearl-based color options. Seeing pics did not prepare me for how "cute" the 901 looked in white. I certainly didn't enjoy my girlfriend's reaction. (Ow, my pride.) But to my surprise, I quickly got used to the 901's apple-esque styling. (In fact, I consider this to be the old Apple IIc I could never have back in high school. Shut up.)
One thing I will NOT suffer, however, is the included 901 "carrying case". Come on ASUS, that's not a case, it's a freakin' purse! (And a cheap-looking purse at that.)
Here's my solution. Buy a book/Bible cover. It should immunize you from purse-snatchers and gay-bashers alike. But more importantly, you'll get better styling in a case that doesn't scream, "Hey! I'm carrying a NETBOOK! Please steal me!"
Yeah, I've used Amazon for years, but this is my first review. Take it for what its worth.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great deal! Comment: If you want a basic computer for writing papers and using the internet this is perfect. The keyboard takes some getting use to because it is small but after you do its not problem at all (although I do have smaller hands). The only real problem I have is clicking the mouse buttons. They are harder to click than most laptops so if the computer is not on a hard level surface, you can't do it quickly. Linux is a great operating system but I am going to switch over to Windows XP because of the noncompatibility of my school's documents. The screen is only too small on some websites. The webcam works great and the speakers are as good as any other laptop's. The internet doesn't slow it down. The only problem with the internet is that if you get kicked off it won't tell you, you just have to know by your pages not loading. Battery lasts all day if you have the screen set to dimmest and aren't doing much on the computer. On full brightness, and on the internet, it lasts about 3.5 hours, so still not bad. Overall a great computer for the price. Plus everyone I meet loves it! Great conversation starter too.
Customer Rating: Summary: Might be a good idea, but not for me Comment: I was looking for a portable computer that I can use on my bed and in the house. I had high expectation for this product.
What I liked:
1. Linux operation system
2. Good battery life
3. Small
What I didn't like:
1. It is heavier than I expected
2. Mouse pad is very stiff to use. After a while, my hand hurts.
3. Of course it takes time to get used to the keyboard. I never really got used to it.
4. Screen is still too small and my eyes get tired after a while.
So I think it can be a good product for lots of people, but doesn't work for me. I think a light weight regular laptop might be the one I was looking for.
Customer Rating: Summary: great hardware, excellent battery life Comment: i purchased the eee 901 about 3 weeks ago and i have been extremely pleased with it. although i have had some minor issues overall i still think this product deserves 5 stars.
pros:
Intel atom processor means faster performance (over celeron predecessor), better battery life and extremely cool operating temperature.
n wireless and gigabit 10/100/1000 ethernet
5 hours EFFECTIVE battery life
2 microphones for stereo recording.
multi point touchpad capable of 2 finger scrolling and pinch zoom
LED screen (as opposed to lcd)
25 second boot time on stock operating system.
surprisingly upgradeable for such a small machine.
cons:
"20 gb" hard drive is actually 2 drives a 16 gb and a 4 gb.
stock operating system is very childish even though this is a fully fledged system
no optical drive (no room for one)
only one ram slot (expandable to 2 gb)
